YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning everybody, the winter chill continues with many lows in the teens this morning as northwest flow continues thanks to a giant, well-heeled upper trough that has parked itself over the northeast U.S.
When the pressure reading of 540 millibars forms a line of equal pressure (a/k/a “isobar”) and sets up well south of New England, that is a general indicator of wintry temperatures and/or conditions, and that is the case today.
As such, highs will only reach the 30s today, tomorrow and Wednesday with lows in the teens tonight and tomorrow night.
Generally, we’ll see a mix of clouds and sun in the high terrain of the Berkshires, western hilltowns and SVT, and mostly sunny skies in the valley, south and east over the next few days.
After highs on Wednesday reach the 35-40º range, clouds will build as an organized Clipper system dives southeast out of Ontario and southwest Quebec into northern New England at night. This will overspread light to moderate accumulating snow through the greater WMass region late Wednesday night into Thursday, so expect a slower commute Thursday morning.
Lows Wednesday night will hang in the mid 20s to low 30s, and we can generally expect 1-3” of snow by Thursday afternoon, at which time some areas in the southern valley south and east in northern CT and southern CMass may mix with or change to rain showers as we’ll be on the mild side of the storm (i.e. its southern flank). Highs Thursday reach the mid 30s to low 40s from north to south.
Behind this system, strong westerly winds will gust up to 30-45mph, ushering the next round of lake effect snows in western NY, as well as the coldest air of nascent cold season here in the greater WMass region.
It will be quite blustery, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wind Advisories hoisted for at least small parts of our region, west of the I-91 corridor.
So, it will be blustery and cold as our storm departs later Thursday, with lows dropping into the mid teens to low 20s.
Friday and Saturday represent the peak cold for this cycle, with highs only expected to rise into the upper 20s to mid 30s with lows in the upper singles to mid teens under mostly sunny skies.
By Sunday, a second Clipper system may bring more light snow, and temps will begin to moderate, climbing well into the 30s for highs.
This looks to precede a Mildening episode next week with potential for some showery periods, which continues to be much needed in our region.
