Good evening everybody, I hope you had a great day today, the weather was certainly lovely! We’ve got snow in the forecast for tomorrow and tomorrow evening, which could cause a few slick spots by evening, so let’s jump into the details below.
For tonight, high clouds will build in at first, and then thicken and lower after midnight.
With temps in the 30s currently with much colder dewpoints, we should see lows bottom out into the upper teens to mid 20s with some early radiational cooling, which will set us up for snow tomorrow morning.
A storm system will be emerging off the Mid-Atlantic coastline Wednesday morning, and will track south of our region, pushing a shield of light to moderate snow into the greater WMass region between 9am and 11am tomorrow from south to north.
The best period of lift (i.e. rising air that produces precipitation) will produce the steadiest snow, which looks to fall sometime between late morning into mid-afternoon, and looks to favor our south and east areas such as the high terrain of northeast CT, easternmost Hampden county and southern Worcester County.
We’re not going to have a super cold ground ahead of time with days and days of sub-freezing temps, so snow will be tough to stick even on grassy areas initially, and the high March sun angle will be working on countering daytime accumulations (with the exception of grassy high-terrain areas, with mostly wet roads).
The most likely time for any snow to stick to road ways would be between the 5-9pm timeframe, but snow should be slowly waning in intensity and exit our region between 8-10pm, so I don’t expect lots of headaches on road ways.
Still, a coating to 2″ is expected across much of the SVT, SWNH and WMass/CMass, with an area of 2-4″ possible in the high terrain of the southeastern Berkshires, western Hampden County, northwest CT, easternmost Hampden County, southern Worcester County and northeast CT at elevation.
As of now, I expect most of us to land in the coating to 2″ category, with accumulation most pronounced on colder natural surfaces like grass, trees, etc.
I will update in the morning with any potential changes before this system moves in.
Highs Wednesday will be in the low to mid 30s, and lows will drop to the mid to upper 20s.
Thursday and Friday looks fair, partly to mostly sunny with highs in the 40s.
Again, the Saturday storm looks potent with a sweeping trough and attendant upper level jet that looks to evacuate air rapidly from aloft, allowing deep and fast surface pressure falls to develop over the New England region, which will bring rain changing to snow and strong gusty winds, especially by Saturday afternoon and evening.
I won’t be surprised if these trends continue to see Wind Advisories get hoisted by the NWS, but we’re early yet.
If the storm tracks east enough, we could see like a 1-3″ snowfall after some rain south and east, and more like 3-6″ north and west in the greater WMass region – I’m not calling those accumulation ranges, I’m just saying that’s the kind of storm this looks like, as it will be FAST moving, and we’ll have mild air in front of this system, which means ground will be milder.
Sunday looks chilly, and then next week looks like early Spring, so the cold and snow is fleeting, folks.

DISCUSSION:
Good morning everybody, that was quite a squall line last night with some thunder and wind gusts that ranged from 40-60mph with a peak gust of 65mph clocked at the Pittsfield Airport.
Winds continued overnight and we still have 3300 folks without power in WMass, 3400 in SVT, over 1000 in northern CT, and a bunch in CMass, too, so crews are still working, despite continued winds gusting 25-40mph today out of the west and northwest.
Thanks for all the reports last night!
As for today, morning gusty conditions and some light snow showers over the Berkshires, Litchfields, Taconics and SVT will abate by afternoon, though we can still expect gusts of 25-40mph this morning despite Wind Advisories being canceled. .
Winds will slacken later as high pressure noses into the region from the west-southwest, which will help develop mostly sunny skies as the day wears on, with some clouds mixed in earlier on.
Highs will reach the mid 30s to low 40s overall today, and lows will dip into the 20s overnight, with some upper teens in the southern Greens.
For Wednesday, clouds increase as a weaker storm system emerges off of the Mid-Atlantic coastline and passes close enough to spread light to moderate snow into our region by late morning into early afternoon.
Highs will reach the mid 30s or so, but snowflakes can still reach the ground if it is above freezing if it’s steady and/or heavy enough and prevents conduction from melting the crystals before they reach the ground, and that looks to be the case tomorrow.
Any light accumulations during the day should build on grassy surfaces. With a high March sun angle, marginal temperatures, and precipitation intensity being light to moderate, roads should remain mostly wet.
However by late afternoon and evening, snow may stick to roads as the precip shield should remain overhead until about 10pm, give or take, before quitting as the storm tracks east and away. Lows will be in the mid to upper 20s.
I don’t expect more than a coating to 2″, and it will be long gone by Thursday afternoon.
Thursday and Friday look partly to mostly sunny with fair conditions and highs in the 45-50º range with lows in the 20s Thursday night and the 30s Friday night.
Then we turn to what looks to be a major storm system running up the east coast, notably on the 29th anniversary of the March Superstorm of in 1993 that blasted the entire east coast with very heavy snow, flooding and wind.
This storm is not going to produce that level of impact, but it still looks quite potent and depending on exact track, we may start as rain on Saturday morning and flip to snow if it tracks east enough. Substantial accumulating snow is possible, along with strong winds, so stay tuned for updates.
