Good morning everybody, rain has overspread the region, and has already begun to mix with and/or change to snowfall across eastern portions of the Berkshires, the western hilltowns, the southern Greens in SVT, northern Litchfield County in NW.CT, and even eastern/northern portions of Cheshire County NH and the Monadnock Region.

What’s doing at your house this morning? Please report below, and please chime back in as the storm develops as the day wears on, especially if you live east of the I-91 corridor, where the biggest impacts from this storm will be experienced.

I am going to double-dash the details below, as we’ve covered the set up in previous posts, and so I just want to go over what I’m seeing this morning, and some slight changes from last night’s thinking, but generally speaking, it looks like a rain to light to moderate wet snow for us along and west of the I-91 corridor, and moderate to major snowstorm east of there, especially in Worcester County and northeast CT.

It is the easternmost towns of WMass in Hampden County, Hampshire County and southwest NH where the transition and trickest zones will be to determine how much snow vs. rain falls there, with eastern Hampden County up into Ware, Belchertown and Pelham into Shutesbury where we’ll be on the line for either a light-moderate snowfall up to a possible major snowfall (8″+).

Ok, as Bugs Bunny used to say say “who knows what heights we’ll hit? On, with the show, this is it!”

SUMMARY
–Temps this morning are still in the 30s and 40s, but we’re seeing cooling in the western hilltowns, eastern Berkshires up into SVT
–Our storm is developing rapidly now as it exits the DelMarVa Peninsula to our south
–The upper low in western PA is beginning to phase with our surface low and will lead to explosive cyclogenesis as our low bombs out and drops to a sub-980mb low, which is a strong mid-latitude cyclone
–This will produce tremendous lift in the atmosphere, and continue to push heavier precipitation northward of the low center, as it tracks northeast, likely passing a little further south of Nantucket than expected last night (this is key)
–Rain in the lower elevations will continue this morning as temps start to cool, and rain will mix with and/or change to snow across the Berkshires, western hilltowns, southern VT, and then do the same by mid/late morning over the high terrain in eastern Franklin and eastern Hampden Counties (and possibly areas of Pelham, MA, which is the highest elevation in eastern Hampshire County).
–Between Noon and 3pm, all of us in WMass, SVT, NCT, CMass and SWNH should be seeing all snow, with the potential for snow to still be mixing in with rain in the lower valley down into I-91 corridor in northern CT, with a change to snow everywhere before sunset

SNOW AMOUNTS
–With a slightly flatter track, I just don’t see how the Pioneer Valley floor from Brattleboro down through Northampton/Springfield and into Hartford will see more than light snow accumulations of 1-3″, maybe a 4″ amount here and there, but I think we could underperform in the valley. It’s just too mild and the heaviest precip should pass east of here, BUT if I’m wrong, then we could see more 3s and 4s in the valley
–I think this 1-4″ can be expected in the Taconics of eastern NY, western Berkshire County in the Housatonic Valley up into Bennington VT and southwest VT, which is further from heavy precip
–The high terrain in the WMass western hilltowns, northern Litchfields, southern VT from the Greens through the Brattleboro area and into western Cheshire County NH (Keene) should see 2-5″ generally
–Eastern Hampden County, eastern Hampshire County, eastern Franklin County, and eastern Cheshire County should see 4-8″ of snowfall after rain this morning where you should see the heavy snow band northwest of the low center back in and brush you for a while, with snowfall rates of an inch an hour possible for a time
–The above transition zone from light impact to major impact is where isolated power outages will begin to set up
–Worcester County/CMass down into northeast CT is the jackpot from this storm with 8-14″ expected of heavy wet snow, numerous power outages possible, thunderstorm possible, whiteout conditions at times, with 1-2″ per hour snowfall rates this afternoon and eveningj

TIMING
Snow winds down between 6-9pm west of the CT River and between 9pm-midnight east of the river
