Light Snowfall on the Way for Wednesday, December 8, 2021 (updated 4:45pm)

SNOW UPDATE TONIGHT: SNOW SHOWERS ARE SLOWLY BLOOMING IN SOUTHERN CT AND TRACKING INTO NORTHERN CT AT 4PM… MEANWHILE, SNOW WITH THE UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM IS TRACKING TOWARD THE CATSKILLS…. BOTH WILL COMBINE OVER THE WMASS REGION BETWEEN 7PM-2AM TONIGHT AND PROVIDE SLIPPERY TRAVEL FOR SOME… 4:45pm Wed…

Good evening everybody (it’s weird to say good evening before 5:00pm, but here we are).

We’ve had some snow showers and flurries today, and lots of dry patches as well, with some coatings on the grass, and wispy snow trails on highways, which are fun to watch for a minute before you realize you gotta keep your eyes on the road!

Anyway, an upper level trough is swinging east toward New England and tilting negatively, which is helping to energize our ocean winter storm that is set to paste Nova Scotia and Newfoundland with a major snowstorm by tomorrow.

As for us in the WMass region, the interaction between the upper trough and the ocean low will produce a snow shield over the WMass region.

You can see that southern CT up to near Hartford, BDL, and possibly as far north as Springfield, MA is starting to fill in with lighter snow, while the upper system to our west is bringing in another larger area of light to perhaps briefly-moderate snow.

These two areas will combine over the greater WMass region with a moist northwesterly flow that may enhance snowfall over the southern Greens, eastern Berkshires, and western hilltowns and any east-facing slopes before midnight, as well as the Worcester and northeast CT highlands later on.

Basically, from 7pm to 2am we’re expecting at least snow showers, if not periods of light snow to briefly moderate at times, which will produce a coating to 2″ generally speaking, and maybe a few isolated 3″ amounts in CMass back into eastern Hampden County.

Even towns in eastern Franklin County like New Salem, Shutesbury, and Wendell could get into this 1-3″ type range, though it’s more likely I think over eastern Hampden County into southwest Worcester County at elevation.

All in all, a light snowfall, BUT one that with very cold temperatures will produce slippery travel conditions tonight and into the pre-dawn hours.

Lows will be in the low to mid 20s, so plenty cold out there.

It’s all gone by morning, and then we get a cold Thursday and Thursday night with some snow showers overnight with a warm front. Then, we’re off to another episode of The Mildening this weekend with Saturday rains!

If you love winter, savor this little taste my friends, and if you still need a 2022 calendar, I have some leftover for you, just click below for info (or to order), and most importantly, take it easy on the roads tonight!

6:55AM-WED: SLIPPERY TRAVEL LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND THIS EVENING WITH LIGHT SNOWFALL AT TIMES, COATINGS TO 2″ EXPECTED… THIS IS A MINOR STORM, BUT COULD AMPLIFY A BIT OVER CENTRAL MA AFTER SUNSET… WARMER BY WEEKEND WITH A RAINY SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT, WINDY AND COOLER ON SUNDAY… WE’RE ENTERING A WARMING TREND…

Good morning peeps, signals as of this morning would indicate that our upper level system tracking into the Lake Ontario area with our surface low that will be rapidly developing well southeast of New England will link a bit tonight, providing light snow and slippery road conditions tonight in many areas, so that’s something you should be aware of if traveling late afternoon or tonight.

But before we jump into our weather details, I’ve got a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, who just opened a new location in West Springfield, MA.

WEATHER BULLETIN:
–Good morning folks, the first widespread snow (albeit light) is on the way, and even though this is a minor event for us, slippery travel conditions will result by or after sunset this evening
–You’ve heard of “getting your sea legs under you”, yes? Well, be sure to get your snow legs under you while driving, as even a small amount of snow-covered roadway can cause spin outs
–For this morning, we’re cold, mostly in the 20s and we’ll have scattered snow showers or flurries at times in the morning and afternoon, with dry lulls mixed in as well
–Highs will reach the low to mid 30s, and it’s possible some snow showers are mixed with or change to rain during early afternoon for points in Springfield south and east
–By around sunset and thereafter, our surface low will be southeast of Nantucket and the upper low to our northwest
–These two look like they will link up via a trough
–This should produce a broad area of lifting air, resulting in a period of steadier light snow
–The snow may fall at a moderate clip at times in the high terrain either side of the CT River
–Everything should quit by around or after midnight, and certainly before dawn
–A coating to 2″ for all of us looks likely at this point, with perhaps a few spots not seeing any accumulation
–There’s now a low chance for over 2″ in parts of central MA/Worcester County, and maybe the southern Greens of VT

–Lows will be in the low to mid 20s under mostly cloudy skies
–So, any snow that falls, with the low sun angle, should stick around through Friday morning, then we should start to melt it away
–Highs Friday will reach the upper 30s to mid 40s as a warm front approaches toward evening
–Lows may get down to the freezing mark for some and as showers move into the region, we may see freezing rain for a time overnight into early Saturday morning
–Otherwise expect first rain showers overnight
–Saturday looks mild with highs 55-60º behind the warm front with scattered showers, then heavier showers and maybe a thunderstorm Saturday evening as the cold front approaches
–Showers may end briefly as snow Saturday night behind the front with lows dropping to near freezing
–Sunday looks cooler and gusty with westerly winds gusting to 30-40mph at times with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s under partly sunny skies
-Early next week looks fair with an extended dry period as a ridge sets up to our south, allowing us to be milder with highs generally in the 45-50º range

Baddaboom, baddabing, that’s the meteorological look at everything!

I hope you have a great day, and *please* be aware of slippery road conditions, especially after sunset when we’ll cool down and roads may become snow covered.

Take care!
