NEW WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR HEAVY SNOW NORTHERN BERKSHIRES, WESTERN FRANKLIN COUNTY, WESTERN WINDHAM COUNTY AND BENNINGTON COUNTIES IN SVT… DENSE FOG ADVISORY IN WINDHAM COUNTY OF NE. CT
(7:50pm Tues)
Good evening everybody, just a quick post to let you know that the current batch of rain and freezing rain is swiftly moving east through the region, then we’ll get a lull between precip clusters.
Is anybody seeing freezing rain or freezing drizzle, and ice glaze on the roads or driveways? Some folks in southern NH, northern Worcester County, SVT, and the CT River Valley of WMass are in the 30-33 degree range, whereas many others are in the mid to upper 30s. Let me know, please.
Also, fog has developed and will be dense in places over northeast CT and RI.
Temps shouldn’t change too much during the overnight hours. Remember, that a couple of rumbles of thunder and brief downpours are possible.
By about 4-7am, a trailing piece energy related to our storm system will be pulling in colder air aloft, with surface cold lagging to the west.
However, if it precipitates hard enough, it looks like we are going to flip to a period of heavy snow through mid morning for the areas mentioned in the headline above. Anywhere from 2-6″ is possible in these sub-regions, and the snow will be heavy and wet. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of a few isolated power outages if some folks can realize those half-foot accumulations.
By noon, the upslope snow machine takes over as the main storm lift and dynamics continues to truck east, which should leave many of us in the valley and low terrain with a mostly cloudy day.
Snow showers will continue into the evening for portions of the Taconics, Berkshires, southern Greens and western hilltowns along and north of Rt. 9. Some snow showers are possible in the Worcester Hills and southwest NH, but accumulations should remain a coating to an inch or so there. The valley might see some coatings, but not expecting much right now.
I will update you the morning, I hope you have a great night tonight…

FREEZING DRIZZLE AND FREEZING RAIN REMAINS A THREAT OVER THE CT VALLEY OF SVT AND WMASS DOWN INTO NCT…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES HAVE BEEN EXTENDED INTO WED. AM FOR FRANKLIN, WORCESTER, AND CHESHIRE COUNTIES, AND TO 5PM TODAY IN HAMPSHIRE, HAMPDEN AND HARTFORD COUNTIES.. SVT SHOULD BE CAREFUL TOO… (3:20pm Tues)
Good afternoon everybody, as you can see in the attached radar still, by about 5-7pm some of us will see some more rain move through. However, some areas will still be below freezing.
Provided that the main roads are well treated, such marginal temps (28-32 degrees), along with temps rising a bit, should result in wet main roads.
However, for any that are untreated, some slippery spots may develop, in conjunction with freezing drizzle that has been ongoing in the parts of the CT River Valley this afternoon.
After a few rounds of showers of rain or freezing rain, overnight, our weather may prove wild with a chance for isolated thunderstorms, lightning, small haill, and then a change to snow and sleet as colder air wraps into the Berkshires, SVT, and western hilltowns by 6am.
Again, in those high terrain areas anywhere from 2-6″ of snow is possible (highest in and around the ski peaks of the southern Greens).
A coating or so is possible in the lower elevations of WMass into CMass. Some areas will get no additional accumulation, likely along and south of the Pike.
I will try to check in tonight with an update of tomorrow morning’s potpourri of pouring hydrological meteors, safe travels to all…

SUMMARY:
–Good morning everybody, we saw a period of accumulating snow move through during the pre-dawn hours
–Many folks are waking up to a coating to an inch of snow, generally speaking
–Aside from a few more snow showers along and north of the Rt. 2 corridor this morning, we will see showers of sleet, freezing rain and freezing drizzle, as temps are still in the teens to mid 20s
–While there’s not a lot of snow on the ground or roads, with very cold temps, driving conditions may be slippery, so give extra time this AM
–As this system continues east, milder air moves into the region, and we rise into the mid to upper 30s this afternoon, when some patchy fog and or a few rain showers are possible
–For tonight, another low pressure system approaches from NY and then redevelops, transferring its energy to the Gulf of Maine overnight
–This will bring rain showers to the region, which will change to snow before sunrise tomorrow morning, mainly along and north of the MassPike
–Temps aloft will cool rapidly, and foster steepening lapse rates and convection air rises
–Given this, do not be surprised if you hear a rumble of thunder tomorrow morning!
–In addition, we could see a burst of moderate accumulating snow in WMass, SVT, SWNH and CMass, with mixed rain and snow further south into N.CT
–Highs will peak in the mid 30s to near 40 before falling on west winds gusting to 30mph in the afternoon
–Additional coatings to an inch are possible across much of our region as this transfer happens, but then we should taper off in the valley
–However, the high terrain of the Bekshires (especially the northern Berkshires), SVT, and western hilltowns should see continued upslope snow showers during the day and into Wednesday night
–This would bring an additional 2-6″ of snow by Thursday morning in the favored west-facing slopes
–Wednesday night lows drop into the 20s
–After a few morning snow showers on Thursday, we watch high pressure over central Canada tap a bit of the Tropospheric Polar Vortex (TPV) and direct northern Canadian air into New England through Saturday
–After a mostly cloudy day Thursday and highs in the low 30s with lows in the teens, we see sunny skies build in for Friday and Saturday
–Friday will see highs in the teens and lows in the single digits as the core of this Arctic lobe dabs the region with its icy finger
–Saturday starts to moderate, but highs only in the 20s
–Then we watch a southern stream storm system rip east across the southern U.S. and emerge near the VA coastline late Saturday night
–If a northern stream piece positions itself properly, it would infuse the storm with cold air, pivot it up the coast, and bring a substantial snowstorm to the region
–However, it could just as easily track flatter and out to sea to our south. I will watch and update you
Have a great day and travel safe today!
