YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning everybody, patchy dense fog across a wide area this morning has caused the hoisting of Dense Fog Advisories by the NWS, and the worst of it lasts through 11am, so take your time with lowered visibilities.
Temps have come up into the 30s to low 40s, and will continue to rise behind the warm front that is pushing north and northeast as I write, and will be spreading scattered showers through our region mid to late morning.
Behind this front, highs should peak out in the mid 40s to low 50s, and fog should become less dense and patchy this afternoon as shower activity abates.
Beyond that, we’ll remain mostly cloudy all day, and southerly breezes will pick up into tonight ahead of our incoming cold front. We’ll have a strong low level jet passing overhead but with a temperature inversion in place, it’ll be hard to mix the bulk of that wind down to the surface, but some gusts to 20-30mph should still materialize.
Lows tonight will be VERY mild, hanging in the 40s to near 50º, which will help bring some wind to the surface, followed by periods of rain, heavy at times, starting around midnight with first showers and ending by late morning or mid-day.
The heaviest rain at the moment looks to fall along and east of the I-91 corridor, and some folks should see over an inch of rain, with less to the west.
Monday will be very mild with highs in the 50s, but do not be fooled into thinking a mild January is on the way – it will not last past New Year’s Day, and we’ll already be slowly cooling by mid-week.
We’re cloudy for the rest of Monday, and lows will dip into the low to mid 30s as we clear out into Tuesday, which looks like a great start to New Year’s Eve holiday plans!
Highs will reach the 45-50º range under mostly sunny skies, but clouds will increase as a second rainy storm is set to track northeast over southern New England on New Year’s Day.
Temps will probably sit somewhere near the low 40s by midnight New Year’s Eve, and while it should be mostly dry in the early evening, we may see first rain showers arrive before midnight, so if you are going to be out late, don some rain gear in case that comes to pass.
New Year’s Morning looks quite wet and rainy, and then later in the afternoon we should see rain abating with highs in the mid 40s. We may see a change to snow in southern VT as this system pulls away late Wednesday.
Behind this system, the pattern begins to change back to a colder wintry setup, and as such lake effect snow showers should develop and make it as far as the Berkshires and southern VT starting Thursday morning and lasting into part of Friday, so some light patches of accumulation are possible.
Highs Thursday and Friday should only peak in the 30s with lows in the upper teens to 20s under partly sunny skies, and Saturday will be even colder with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. This colder air will arrive in time such that we could see a winter storm by Monday, so I will keep you updated all the way.
Have a great day!
