Western Mass Weather for March 11, 2019

SNOW SHOWERS TONIGHT IN THE NORTHERN/CENTRAL TACONICS, NORTHERN BERKSHIRES AND SVT WITH LIGHT ACCUMS POSSIBLE… A FEW LIGHT RAIN OR SNOW SHOWERS WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO PRE-DAWN HOURS OF THURSDAY MORNING WITH WARM FRONT… MILD THURSDAY AND FRIDAY WITH RAIN, HEAVY AT TIMES, AND POTENTIAL STRONG SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS… COOLER, NICER WEEKEND, SPRING IS SPRINGING, FOLKS, AND WINTER IS WANING… (4:20pm Monday)

Good evening everybody, tappity tap, drippity drip, slushity slush goes winter as The Meltening (Thanks to Bette for that one!) is underway.

It’s everybody’s favorite moment of the day, Double-Dash Time, so here goes!

–An upper level system works through our region tonight, and will kick up some snow showers in the aforementioned high terrain
–Some light accumulations possible of a coating to an inch or so, while most of us remain dry
–Lows tonight only drop to 25-30 as west winds remain active, gusting 20-30mph, which prevents radiational cooling from maximizing
–Still, we will refreeze our melt of today, so black ice patches will form overnight and into Tuesday morning
–For Tuesday, colder air advects into the region, but it’s nothing compared to last week
–Northwest flow will setup and gust to 20mph at times with highs 35-40 degrees
–Wind slackens Tues. night as high pressure spreads east into the region, and skies clear
–The coldest night for perhaps until next Autumn (but certainly until next week) sets up with lows in the mid to upper teens
–Wednesday is mostly sunny with high pressure moving through, with highs reaching the mid to upper 40s
–Clouds build in the evening as a warm front pushes through overnight
–With lows dropping into the upper 20s to low 30s, a few light rain or snow showers are possible by early Thursday morning, but no accumulation expected
–Thursday and Friday are very mild!
–As we enter the warm sector ahead of our incoming Friday storm system, which will pass WELL northwest of us, highs will reach the low to mid 50s under partly sunny skies, with lows in the 30s as clouds increase
–Rain showers will be possible before dawn on Friday, and the day looks rainy, but very mild, with temps well into the 50s, maybe approaching 60!
–Downpours are possible, and with a strong low level jet streak overhead, that rain may help to drag that wind down to the surface, and create some damaging wind gusts, especially in the high terrain
–The weekend looks cooler behind this system, with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the 40s Saturday, and upper 30s to 40 on Sunday, with lows in the 20s

Have a great night!

PATCHY BLACK ICE AND FOG THIS MORNING IN THE CT RIVER VALLEY OF WMASS AND N.CT, AS WELL AS SOUTHWEST NH… UPSLOPE RAIN SNOW SHOWERS IN SVT, TACONICS AND BERKSHIRES THIS AFTERNOON MAY OCCASIONALLY SPILL INTO THE WESTERN HILLTOWNS… MILDER AND DRIER WEEK OVERALL WITH RAIN BY FRIDAY… (5:40am Mon.)

Good morning everybody, with patchy fog and some temps at or below freezing this morning, some black ice is possible. Southern NH also had reports of patchy freezing drizzle, so just have some awareness this morning of surface conditions, which may be slippery in spots. I will summarize the rest of our week below.

SUMMARY
–After some early morning patchy fog, a cold front passes through the region
–This will allow west winds to gust 25-35mph today
–Highs will reach the low to mid 40s
–As the day wears on, leftover moisture in the atmosphere will meet up with said wind and form mixed upslope rain and snow showers in SVT, the Taconics and Berkshires
–As the day turns to night, these will become all snow and may spill into the western hilltowns
–A few coatings are possible in spots
–These should wane as the night time hours deepen
–Lows tonight will dip into the mid to upper 20s, and west winds will continue to be active gusting 20-30mph as colder air moves in for a day and a night
–For Tuesday, the flow turns out of the northwest and winds will gust over 30mph at times
–Skies should be partly to mostly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 30s
–As high pressure moves overhead, and winds correspondingly slacken, radiational cooling will be maximized under clear skies with lows plummeting into the teens, the coldest night of the next 7 days
–Wednesday looks mostly sunny and milder, as high pressure postions itself to our east, creating a warming return southwesterly flow
–Highs should be well into the 40s with lows in the 20s
–Thursday is a transition date but a mild one
–Highs reach the mid 40s to near 50 degrees as clouds build in advance of a storm system that will track through the western Great Lakes
–By Friday, rain showers with some downpours is possible with highs well into the 50s. Some places may reach 60 degrees!
–The weekend is cooler and drier, with highs in the 40s Saturday and mid 30s to near 40 on Sunday under mostly sunny skies
–It is by mid to late next week that I will be monitoring for a late-season winter storm potential, so stay tuned

Alright folks, that does it for now, have a great day!
