CLEAN YOUR SLUSH BLOBS TONIGHT LEST YOU HAVE TO NAVIGATE NEAR-FUTURE ICE ROCKS… IN OTHER WORDS, CLEAN THOSE WAYS AND PATHS, FOLKS, WITH MOISTURE-LADEN SNOW, EVERYTHING FREEZES SOLID TONIGHT… A CALM, COLD WEEK LIES AHEAD WITH SOME LIGHT SNOW POSSIBLE FRIDAY, AND SNOW OR MIX TO RAIN SUNDAY… (6:30pm, Monday, 3/4/19)
Good evening everybody! While some of my concerns for last night’s storm came true in reference to lighter totals due to sinking air northwest of that heavy snow band over northeast CT and southern Worcester County, and while most totals verified more or less in WMass, SVT, SWNH and N. Worcester County, I did not expect such an over-performance of heavy snowfall for southern CMass and parts of northern CT, whoa!!

Click the link that follows below and scroll down for CT and MA totals, check out Tolland County and Windham County in CT, as well as Worcester County and Middlesex County in CMass and EMass! Almost a foot and a half!
There were many 10-16″ readings, with 3″ per hour snowfall rates documented and observed overnight, as well as several hours of 1″ to 2″ per hour snowfall rates, which I mentioned as possible last night.
LESSON LEARNED
In the future, I will be more alert to setups where convection in the southern flank of a developing storm exceeds expectations, as was the case with yesterday’s horrible and deadly tornado outbreak in the Southeast U.S.
This energy release, in the form of latent heat, helped foster convection closer to our region near the DelMarVa Peninsula, which was then ferried northeast up and through northeast CT and southern Worcester County into northern RI and EMass. That’s why this storm overachieved there.
CLEAR YOUR PATHS AND WAYS TONIGHT, ALSO WATCH OUT FOR BLACK ICE/REFREEZING
Temps are still in the upper 20s to low 30s in the valley into CMass, but crashing into the upper teens and low 20s over the Taconics and Berkshires and western hilltowns. Winds will gust to 20mph at times out of the west.
Best to clear your paths and ways tonight, as slush and leftover snow will freeze solid overnight, as lows drop into the upper single digits across the region.
Any snow melt will also refreeze tonight, so watch out for slick spots tonight and tomorrow morning.
COLD WEEK AHEAD
For Tuesday, expect mostly sunny skies for much of the day. Some clouds may move in late, as a secondary cold front approaches the region. This will bring with it some scattered snow showers at night, but shouldn’t amount to much. There is a low chance that a heavier snow shower or squall could reach the Taconics, Berkshires or SVT.
Highs tomorrow will be in the low 20s in the high terrain, and mid to upper 20s in the valley. Again, lows will drop into the upper single digits. Very cold nights ahead.
For Wednesday, any morning flurries will lead to a mostly sunny day with highs in the low to mid 20s, with lows in the mid to upper single digits as high pressure crests through the region.
Thursday is again mostly sunny and cold with similar high and low temps as Wednesday.
As high pressure moves east, and starts to put us in a more southwesterly flow, we will see highs get up to either side of 30 degrees under mostly sunny skies.
There is a chance south of the Pike that we could see some light snow Friday night, but that system may be pushed south and out to sea.
Saturday looks sunny with highs near freezing and lows in the teens.
Then we watch for Sunday to produce an inland cutting storm that could produce a period of snow and ice here in WMass, changing to rain, and lasting into Monday.
After that, we’re changing the pattern a bit to a more early Spring feel, and temps in the low 50s are possible next week!
Ok, that’s our weather picture, I hope you have a great night, and if you feel my work is worth supporting and keeping alive and thriving, I would be grateful for your support tonight during my 2019 Annual Support Drive which ends this Sunday. Thank you!

—————————————————-
Good morning everybody, we got 5.5″ in Florence, and it appears that valley areas received a general 4-7″ of snow with some sub-4″ amounts possible in western Franklin County and a few other locations, as well as some 10″+ amounts down in northern CT, and possibly in towns like Wales or Holland, on east into southern Worcester County.
So I am curious… how much did you receive?
Please list your town and amounts below. Here are some official and unofficial reports:
–Watertown, CT: 8.3″
–Woodstock, CT: 11.5″
–Lenox, MA: 4″
–Longmeadow, MA: 4.5″
–Chicopee, MA: Almost 5″
–Worcester, MA: 7″
–Florence, MA: 5.5″
As of 5am, snow continues to push east of I-91 and will be through WMass by 7am, and through CMass by 8-9am.
This was definitely a CT, CMass and EMass snowstorm, although it brought the plows out just about everywhere.
SUMMARY
–Snow ends this morning, with partly sunny skies developing as our storm tracks off into the Gulf of Maine
–Highs today will reach the low to mid 30s before crashing back into the high single digits in the high terrain and low teens in the valley
–The snow was mostly of the heavy and wet variety in the valley, so with more water in it, we will see some melt today that will freeze into black ice patches tonight and by tomorrow morning
–Also, west winds will gust to 20mph at times
–We can thank a Hudson Bay low pressure system for draining our upcoming cold Arctic air mass into our region
–Tuesday through Thursday will be the heart of our late-season cold snap
–While a few snow showers are possible in the high terrain Tuesday night due to lake effect, we will enjoy generally fair weather through this period
–It will be mostly sunny through the period with highs in the mid to upper 20s Tuesday and lows in the upper singles to low teens
–Wednesday and Thursday will feature highs in the upper teens to low 30s and lows in the single digits
–By Friday, there is a low chance that a northern stream disturbance will whip through west to east bringing some light accumulating snow with it
–Otherwise, Saturday looks nice with clouds building late and snow and mixed precipitation possible for Sunday afternoon and night. More on that we get closer.
Ok folks, please post your pics and amounts below. Hey, at least we were bookended this winter with two pure all-snow storms.
