POWER OUTAGES CONTINUE…
According to MEMA, there are under 9000 outages that still remain. Many are centered in western Hampshire County in the high terrain like Worthington, Chesterfield and Cummington, and western Franklin County in towns like Charlemont, Ashfield and Conway. Of course, other sporadic outages exists across the whole region, but the largest outages are centered in those spots (as well southwest Worcester County, like Sturbridge). That means people are cold and some without running water, so please take care of your neighbors and check on them, when possible.

VERY COLD WITH COLDER WIND CHILLS TONIGHT
For tonight, winds will continue to die down as high pressure moves into through region quickly tomorrow morning. This will eliminate the pressure graident, and cause northwest gusts to 25mph or so overnight to die down by mid to late morning tomorrow.

However, with lows in the single digits either side of zero degrees, and these lighter gusts, wind chill readings will drop into the single digits below zero, and 10-20 degrees below zero in the high terrain of the Berkshires, western hilltowns, SVT and northern Worcester County (and possibly into southwest NH too).

ACCUMULATING SNOW ON THE WAY…
For Wednesday, cold air continues to drain into the region. Any sunny breaks earlier will disappear as clouds build with the passing of the day.

Highs will only reach the upper teens in the high terrain and low 20s in the Pioneer Valley of WMass and northern CT, including southern Worcester County.

It will be VERY dry here tomorrow well into the afternoon, with dewpoints in the single digits. As snow moves in overhead, it will produce virga, which refers to snow that evaporates before hitting the ground.

By between 4-6pm, snow should start reaching the ground as the sun is setting, and with very cold antecedent air in place, snow will stick to the roads with haste. This will cause slippery driving conditions to develop with only a coating of snow, so give yourself some extra time tomorrow night.

SNOW AMOUNTS
It will be snowing all night long, and until about 6am, give or take an hour. The steadiest/heaviest snow with this system should fall between 9pm and 4am. There will be little wind, and we should get some fluffy, powdery dendrites to fall light to moderately at times.

Total snowfall across the region is a widespread 2-5″ of snow. The lower range could be found in northern parts of southern VT and southwest NH, with the mid to higher ranges (and a few 6″ amounts) generally south of the MA/VT-NH border, throughout the Taconics, WMass, CMass, and down into northern CT.

DIFFUSE STORM SATURDAY
After snow quits Thursday, we develop a partly sunny day with highs 25-30 degrees and lows in the teens. Friday looks similar, though a bit milder with highs in the low to mid 30s and lows in the 20s, as a storm passes to our south and out to sea.

By Saturday, two more waves develop – a northern stream and southern stream disturbance. However, they don’t look like they are going to hook up and become friends, which will lead to a milder day and a mix of snow and rain showers. Earlier in the day, precip could be focused south of the Pike, where as night, another round of mixed precip could be focused up into SVT and SWNH. I will have to keep you updated on this feature.

COASTAL SNOWSTORM SUNDAY?
This is a developing signal, which shows an trough over the Great Lakes, and a piece of energy rounding the southern and south-southeastern flank of this trough, and heading northeast, trying to gain latitude.

This storm has the potential to become a moderate to major snowstorm (like a 6-10″ deal, with a few 1′ amounts), but it’s VERY early. Just something to watch for now, but the potential is there. That would be late Sunday night and impact the Monday morning commute if it comes together.

Beyond that?

We should cold next week for the first full week of March. A couple of additional storm threats are there, a weaker one for mid week, and possible season changer next weekend before we start building a ridge in the east, and moving into early Spring.

Of course, it’s March, but there is a building signal for Spring to begin to work back up into New England, so I will keep you updated on all of it.

Have a great night, and if you haven’t yet had a chance to contribute to my 2019 Annual Support Drive, it’s still ongoing. My goal is to have 5% of my audience pitch in what each person feels is right, and so far I’m a little under a third of the way to my goal.

–A legit Alberta Clipper system, the first this year, will glide west to east and track to our south, existing the Jersey coast tomorrow night
–This allow for light snow to break out across the region by early afternoon and last through Wednesday night and quitting sometime either side of Thursday morning’s sunrise
–Main impact will be the Wednesday evening commute with VERY cold antecedent air, snow will start to stick quick, and especially so once the sun goes down after 5:30pm
–Light to moderate snow Wednesday night tapers off by sunrise Thursday morning, but not before 2-5″ should fall across the region
–Thursday will moderate into the upper 20s and low 30s for highs as partly sunny skies develop by afternoon, with lows in the teens
–More snow and ice is possible for Friday into Saturday, and I will attempt to dial that in more in tonight’s evening report, so stay tuned for that
–Sunday is certainly the pick of the upcoming weekend, and cold weather continues next week with another shot at a winter storm by mid week

Have a great day!
