Western Mass Weather for January 26, 2019

SNOW SHOWERS TOMORROW AFTERNOON COULD COAT THE GROUND IN SPOTS… TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING CONTINUES TO REVEAL SIGNALS FOR A PLOWABLE SNOWSTORM THAT COULD IMPACT THE TUESDAY EVENING AND WEDNESDAY MORNING COMMUTES… BITTERLY COLD ARCTIC AIR FOLLOWS FOR LATE WEEK… (7:25am Saturday)

Good morning everybody, we’re starting off in the teens this morning, quite cold out there. The temps this morning will be the high temps by late week, if that puts i perspective what’s coming to our shores in the fairly near future.

We’ve got higher surface pressures to our west, and an upper low way north over Hudson’s Bay which will be sliding south with time this upcoming week, and position a cold pool of air to aid in our storm potential for Tuesday.

For today, it will be partly sunny with highs in the 20s and lows in the teens. A flurry is possible in the afternoon.

For Sunday, a brief mild-up will produce highs into the mid to upper 30s, but a cold front will be moving in quickly. This, combined with a little lift from a lower level jet could produce some scattered snow showers, some of which may be heavier. Some scattered coatings of snow are possible by Sunday night, with lows back down into the teens.

High pressure moves back in on Monday and provides us with a beautiful, sunny, and seasonably cold day with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. Clouds build into the region Monday night with lows in the teens a few snow showers possible late.

The Tuesday into Wednesday period holds the only real winter storm potential through the following weekend.

What will transpire will be the result of subtle interactions between a parent low in the northern stream and how it will help or hinder the induction of a stronger secondary low pressure system off the Mid-Atlantic coast. Also, WHERE exactly that secondary low tracks will provide further details as to our precipitation type.

Without the secondary low development, we just go from snow to rain or ice on Tuesday, and back to snow as colder air filters in behind with a lighter storm. However, as of now, it looks like the secondary low will be stronger and keep colder air in the region while increasing precipitation intensity. This would provide a plowable snowfall on Tuesday and Tuesday night, and possibly lasting into Wednesday morning.

I am not going to discuss amounts in any detail at this early stage, but at the moment, it looks like at least a moderate snowfall of a 3-6″ or 4-8″ type of storm is possible, and we can’t rule out a bigger storm either.

After that storm passes, the lobe of Arctic air waiting in our northwest wings will dump into the region, and it will as cold and windy as it was with the last Arctic blast for Thursday into Saturday, so get ready folks, more winter is on the way!

Have a great day!
