THE COLD HELD, FREEZING RAIN SHOULD BE RELEGATED TO SOUTH OF THE PIKE… MOSTLY SLEET AND SNOW IN OUR REGION… PLEASE POST CURRENT SNOW TOTALS BELOW… POWER OUTAGES NOT EXPECTED IN WMASS OR CMASS… (9:35am Sunday)
Good morning everybody, had to get some sleep, and I’m back at it. The cold held! Temperatures are in the teens in the north valley and low 20s down into the south valley and northern CT.
Of course, the warmth did move in aloft, but on latest guidance and observations, it appears that it’s sleeting all the down into northern CT, down to Hartford. If we were going to have a serious freezing rain threat, it would be at least freezing rain in widespread coverage across northern CT. Some could still get into southern Worcester County and northeast CT, but I think it stays south of the Pike and down in central CT.
Meriden, CT, north of New Haven, received six-tenths of an inch of freezing rain, and it is still glazing ice down there. Last night I was concerned that could get up in our region, but it did not. The lesson learned is to never underestimate low level cold’s power to stay in place, but also to produce a thicker surface cold layer when Arctic air is positioned to our north.
At the same time, it continues to snow in Keene, NH and Brattleboro, VT. I’m sensing it’s all snow in western Franklin County, but I need folks in western Franklin and western Hampshire Counties to let me know if you are seeing snow or sleet, please post below!
Based on this and other observations, I believe that while some sleet could mix into those areas, some folks in SVT and SWNH, and perhaps even the western hilltowns and northeast Berkshires may see mostly snow. There is some heavier precip moving in for the late morning and early afternoon that could bring a sleety burst with milder aloft.
As for snow totals, I had revised down to 2-5″ northern CT south of the Pike, 4-8″ Litchfield County, southern Berks, western Hampden, much of Hampshire and Franklin and Worcester County south of Pike, and 6-12″ northern Berks/Taconics, western hilltowns in Hampshire/Franklin, northern Worcester county north of Rt. 2 and SVT and SWNH, with up to 15″ in places, and 18″ or so in southern Greens.
I think generally the high end of all those ranges will play out, and a bit higher for some folks to be sure, as the freezing rain didn’t materialize.
Whatever is falling from the sky will quit between 3-5pm, with showery precip thereafter.
Please post below what you are seeing now, and how much snow/sleet you have! Thank you!!
P.S. I will update sometime this afternoon, as Wind Chill Advisories and Warnings have been posted for tonight and tomorrow morning, so the cold blast is still on the way, along with gusty northwesterly winds.
