SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS IN THE HIGH TERRAIN TODAY GIVE WAY TO MORE COLD AIR WHICH SETS US UP FOR A SNOWY FRIDAY MORNING COMMUTE… HEAVY SNOW AND ICE EXPECTED SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY FOLLOWED BY A BRUTAL ARCTIC BLAST AND FLASH FREEZE…
(8:40am Wednesday)
Good morning everybody, it’s a tale of three storms impacting our weather over the next 5 days. Today is the first, which is beyond mild, if you can even call it an impact, but it does bring some clouds and a few snow showers. The second is from late Thursday night to early Friday afternoon with light accumulating snow. The third, of course, is our elongated frontal boundary that will focus a large amount of snow, sleet and freezing rain over the region Saturday night through Sunday. #TheDevilIsInTheDetails
DETAILS
–For today, a Clipper low races east to our north, bringing a partly sunny day on average with some cloudy periods
–Highs will rise into the low to mid 30s, and some scattered snow showers are possible in SVT, SW.NH and the high terrain of WMass and NW.CT
–West winds will gust to 20mph at times, and cold air advection will ensue tonight behind the cold front, dropping temps into the low teens, with some upper single digit readings possible in SVT
–High pressure noses into the region tomorrow with a beautiful, but cold, mostly sunny day and highs in the low to mid 20s
–Clouds increase Thursday night with lows in the teens as low pressure approaches from the west, destined to slide off the Mid-Atlantic coast and pass to our south
–Snow should begin either side of midnight, and it will become steady and light to moderate in intensity during the Friday morning commute
–This low has some mild air with it, but I think we remain all snow along and north of the Pike, where 1-3″ of snow is expected
–Some rain may mix in later in the morning toward noon as the storm gets ready to depart the region, so a coating to 2″ is more likely south of the Pike
–More cold air comes in behind this system as it sits just to our north and west, ready to be pulled into the region. Lows will be in the teens Friday night
–Saturday starts off partly sunny, but quickly clouds up in advance of our bigger storm system
–Snow showers are possible before sunset, but most of the early onset steady snow moves in between 6-9pm the way it looks now
–Snow continues at night and by Sunday morning, depending on track, may change to sleet, and possibly freezing rain, especially along and south of the Rt. 9 corridor, the way it looks now. ****THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS IT’S 4 DAYS AWAY****
–Depending on exact storm track, we will see any ice turn back to snow by Sunday afternoon/evening
–The key, if we want all snow, is for the southern branch storm to not join forces with the northern piece
–Oddly, we want both pieces to track more flatly/zonally/west-to-east
–That would hold the cold air in at all levels, and create a ribbon of heavy snow across the region
–Whoever sees all snow could easily see over a foot of snowfall with this system, between 10-18″
–Whoever gets ice mixed in, will see amounts cut down, but there would be accumulations on the front AND back end of the system before it winds up Sunday night
–Sunday night looks brutal. As snow ends, cold air rushes in, and freezes everything in sight, with strong winds
–Wind chills would be below zero for the Monday morning commute, most likely
I will keep you updated, have a great day!
