Western Mass Weather for January 15, 2019

FRIDAY MORNING COMMUTE TO BE IMPACTED BY SNOW… SUNDAY STORM CARRIES MAJOR UNCERTAINTY STILL… LIKELY TO BE SOME MIX TO ICE FOR WMASS FOR A TIME, WITH A CHANGE BACK TO SNOW SUNDAY EVENING AS IT PULLS AWAY…. FLASH FREEZE POSSIBLE BY MONDAY MORNING…
(8:15am Tues)

Good morning everybody, we continue to have two wintry storms on our horizon, one for Thursday night into the first half of Friday, and the bigger one for late Saturday night through Sunday.

This post will be shorter, as there is still much uncertainty regarding Sunday’s event. Models have trended further north and west (which is a warmer), but it’s still 5 whole days away, so there’s not much use in discussing it in detail at this time.

For now, I am going to just jump into the details below:

–We rebound well today in terms of temps, soaring from the singles early this AM to the upper 20s to low 30s for highs (high terrain to low)
–Skies will be mostly sunny. Hope some of you saw that sunrise!
–Lows tonight will be either side of 20 degrees as a light southwesterly flow develops in response to a low tracking north of us
–For tomorrow, low pressure glides east along the northern New England border with Canada
–This will kick off some scattered snow showers in the Berkshires, western hilltowns and SVT, generally north of Rt. 9 corridor
–Highs tomorrow will be in the low 30s in the high terrain and mid to upper 30s in the valley under partly sunny skies with lows in the low to mid teens
–Thursday is cooler, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 20s as high pressure builds through the region
–We cloud up Thursday night as low pressure tracks east-northeast from the lower Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valley toward the Mid-Atlantic coastline
–This feature could amplify a bit and strengthen
–Still, it’s a pretty flat-tracking system, and it will be progressive, meaning nothing will stop it or slow it down
–I think generally a 1″-4″ can be expected, lower amounts in northern CT where a change to rain is expected before precip quits by noon or early afternoon
–We should see the higher amounts along and north of Rt. 9 in WMass, SVT, and SWNH (and northern Worcester County) where it stays snow longer, or all snow
–Highs on Friday will crest the low to mid 30s, and lows will dip into the teens
–Saturday starts off partly sunny, but clouds up quickly, with snow moving in by dinner time
–With antecedent cold air in place, laid in by the Friday storm and cold air behind that feature, there is no doubt that we will all start as now Saturday night
–The question is where does the storm track exactly, and how much mid-level warm air gets introduced in terms of the icing threat
–Some trends this morning are for a more inside runner, but I don’t buy the snow to rain look right now
–I think this snow to ice and back to snow. MAYBE some rain is possible in northern CT, but unless this thing cuts WAY west, we’re looking at a snow to ice storm, or (hopefully) a snowstorm if it tracks further south

More as we get closer, for now just stay tuned and I will keep you updated.

Have a great day!
