YOUR WEEKLY WEATHER NUTSHELL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
–Snow is falling in southern VT, southwest NH and perhaps mixed with sleet into parts of far northeast Franklin and far northwest Worcester Counties in MA
–Otherwise we’re dealing with freezing rain with some sleet mostly north of the Pike in the valley, and down into northwest CT and northeast CT either side of the valley
–We’ve also got plain rain further south and nudging into the Springfield/Hartford metro
–Precipitation will become steadier and heavier into the afternoon, and turn freezing rain to plain rain, though colder air may linger in the high terrain and prolong icing in central and northern Berkshires, western hilltowns and far northern MA in Franklin and Worcester Counties
–The wildcard is southern VT and southwest NH where up to 4-10″ of snow could fall, and maybe over a foot in the high SVT peaks (this includes back end snow that comes in 6-10pm tonight)
–Freezing rain may accrete up to a quarter inch in some high terrain areas west of the I-91 corridor, but should be less thick most everywhere else where icing continues this morning
–Again, a cold heavy rain develops this afternoon as a slug of moisture is fed northward into New England with highs only in the mid to upper 30s
–Some areas in far northern MA on north may hang in the upper 20s to low 30s or so
–1.5-3″ of rain is expected by tonight, and with a cold front pushing in from the west as the storm tracks south of us, a change back to snow is expected, especially for SVT and northwest MA in the northern Berkshires, northwest hilltowns toward Greenfield
–A new coating to 3″ of snow is possible from that frontal passage before the storm quits by midnight
–North winds will gust up to 30mph overnight as temps drop into the upper teens to mid 20s so watch for black ice overnight
–Sunday looks blustery early with highs in the mid to upper 30s under sunny skies, and cold at night with lows either side of 20º
–Early to mid next week should feature high pressure building in from the west with some sunshine and highs in the 40s before more showers move back in for later Wednesday and Thursday with a frontal passage
YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning folks, we started with a warm advection snow burst last night, and then transitioned to sleet and freezing rain for much of WMass, CMass and northern CT, with snow further north into SVT/SWNH.
Now we’re mostly in a freezing rain mode with plain rain developing slowly from the south.
Rain will fall heavily at times by this afternoon, but freezing rain is lingering in the central and northern Berkshires, western hilltowns, central and northern Pioneer Valley and northern central MA, so watch for slippery travel, especially on the secondary and tertiary roads.
A higher sun angle in late March will help the main roads.
Snow in SVT and SWNH goes to a mix as the day wears on, while the rest of us (aside from colder icy pockets in the high terrain) go to a cold, heavier rainfall that pushes in from the south.
This will last into the evening, and then a cold front will approach from the west by dinner time.
This should flip back any SVT/SWNH and far northwest mix to snow, with additional light accumulations of a coating to 3″, with some coatings possible south and east into the Pioneer Valley before it all quits by midnight as the storm tracks south of Nantucket and pulls away seaward.
It’ll get cold tonight with lows in the upper teens to mid 20s and northerly winds will gust up to 30mph behind the storm, so black ice is possible, even though some standing water will evaporate due to wind.
Sunday looks breezy and sunny with highs in the 30s and lows in the upper teens to 20s with fair weather into early next week, and showers by mid-week.
Have a great day, take it easy on the road ways especially at elevation with ice accretion, and if you haven’t already, I hope you can chip in to support my reporting before my Drive ends tomorrow so I can continue through 2024… even $5 or $10 helps, thank you…

>>> BE KIND <<<
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
–Kurt Vonnegut
