Western Mass Weather for November 26, 2018

WINTER STORM WARNING NOW POSTED FOR BENNINGTON AND WESTERN WINDHAM COUNTY… WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY STILL IN EFFECT FOR WEST COUNTY… WIND ADVISORIES POSTED FOR BERKSHIRES AND S.VT… (2:15pm Mon)

Good afternoon everybody, we’ve got moderate to heavy rain and snow on the way for our region. Winter Storm Warnings have now been hoisted for the high terrain of S.VT. Yes, I realize the term “hoisted” is from the 18th century, but so is a part of me. If hoisted doesn’t work for, read it as saying “posted”. :-)

HIGH ELEVATION SNOWS
Elevations above 2000 feet (and possibly even above 1500 feet), which would involve some areas of western Franklin County west of Rt. 112 into the northern Berkshires, Taconics, and even the NW corner of Litchfield County CT (Mts. Frissell, Gridley, Round, and Bear), along with the high terrain of S.VT generally west and north of Hinesburg Road in Windham County could see 4-8″ of heavy wet snow overnight.

In fact, some of the high peaks in the southern Green Mountains in VT where colder air will be produced in a more widespread fashion could see 6-12″! Think Mt. Snow, Stratton, Bromley, up into Okemo and on north.

The VT ski areas will get pasted with snow, some over a foot, so if you’re a skier, this is great news!

When you combine heavy wet snowfall with winds gusting 30-50mph, it could cause some sporadic power outages as well as slippery travel.

Folks who live at elevations of 1000-1500 feet in NW.CT, WMass, S.VT, northernmost Worcester County and portions of Cheshire County in southwest NH could see anywhere from a slushy coating up to 3″ (maybe 4″) by noon tomorrow. This is a very elevation-dependent storm in terms of wintry precip. Some sleet is possible, as well.

Below 1000 feet, snow could mix with rain, but it will be mainly a rainy storm, and anywhere from 3/4s to 1 1/2″ of rain will fall, and it will fall heavily at times.

Winds in the valley should gust to 30mph or so out of the east tonight and early tomorrow.

This storm is moving in, people, so those in the high terrain above 1000 feet, and especially between 1500-2000+ feet, are going to get a taste of winter over night.

Safe travels to all….

PATCHY BLACK ICE POSSIBLE THIS MORNING… DENSE FOG ADVISORY POSTED FOR WMASS, CMASS, NW.CT, AND S.VT… WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY POSTED FOR WESTERN FRANKLIN COUNTY FOR THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD… RAIN ON THE WAY AGAIN FOR TONIGHT AND EARLY TOMORROW MORNING… (6:25am Mon)

Good morning everybody, I’m still up and taking nourishment as my father likes to say, which means I’ve got yet another installment of one of my weathery quasi-daily-dissertations for you. Commence bulletization in 4, 3, 2, 1….

MONDAY
–Temps are starting off near freezing this morning, and with some freezing drizzle and patchy dense fog in spots, some icy road ways are possible
–Best chance for this is in SW.NH, S.VT, the WHs (western hilltowns) and northern Berkshires
–East winds will gust 20-30mph as the afternoon wears on
–Highs will reach the mid to upper 30s in the high terrain and the low 40s in the CT River Valley
–Parent low pressure will pass well to our west, but stronger secondary low development will occur off the Mid-Atlantic and track over southeast MA tonight
–Rain showers move in by late morning to early afternoon, with heaviest rain tonight into the early morning hours of Tuesday
–1-1.5″ of rain is expected across the region
–Snow should mix into the higher terrain of the northern Berkshires western Franklin County, S.VT and possibly even western Hampshire County
–A slushy coating to 2″ is possible in these areas overnight, and snow could mix in as early as the late afternoon and early evening
–In fact, for elevations above 1500-2000 feet, 2-6″ of snow is possible.
–Lows tonight will dip into the low to upper 30s everywhere

TUESDAY
–For Tuesday, rain and snow should quit by noon with mostly cloudy skies expected
–Highs will be in the mid 30s to low 40s with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s

WEDNESDAY
–We will be dealing with slow departing upper level energy
–As this swings through the region, it will keep the clouds around along with some rain and snow showers
–It’s not out of the question that we could receive some additional very light snow accumulations in the high terrain of WMass and S.VT by Wednesday night
–Highs are expected to be cooler and in the 30s with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s

THURSDAY AND BEYOND
–Thursday through Saturday looks like a fair weather period with a return to sunshine
–Highs are expected to be in the 30s with lows in the 20s through the period
–A pattern shift is evident, with more zonal (i.e. west to east) flow
–This will bring milder Pacific air into the region with highs well into the 40s into next week
–It also means some more storminess in the form of quick-hitting, generally rainy events, as lows track to our northwest for the most part, and keep cold locked north of us
–That doesn’t mean it can’t snow at times, but it’s looking milder at the moment
–Hopefully the storms will be so quick moving and starved off Gulf and Atlantic moisture that they won’t drop as much rain as we’ve seen this Autumn so far

Have a great day!
