MORNING DISCUSSION
Good morning everybody, while there’s no earth-shaking weather conditions we need to be concerned about over the next 7 days, we definitely are on a bit of a roller coaster with our snaky, undulating frontal boundary that will lollygag ’round the region over the next 60 hours before it finally is swept seaward by a cold frontal passage Thursday night that induces what I’m calling “The Springening of 2023”, which arrives Friday and then more fully forms over the weekend with mild temps and plenty of sunshine – Winter will be ovah!
However, Winter does have another arrow in its quiver for tomorrow and tomorrow night, but it will be short-lived, and effectively a blip on Spring’s radar.
For today, we have cloudier conditions north with some showers along and north of the Rt. 2 corridor that will slowly lift northward with time.
This means the northern halves of Bennington and Windham Counties into northern Cheshire County can expect a wet first half of the day, or at least periods of showers with some lulls, with highs in the 50s.
Conversely, as the front bobs north, partly to mostly sunny skies develop along and south of Rt. 2 in MA and CT, allowing for temps to rise up into the low to mid 60s, with some upper 60s possible south of the Pike – a few spots may hit 70º!
Clouds will build back in late in the day and overnight as lows drop into the upper 30s and 40s with our “bobbed-north” front sagging south and through the region to the south and southwest, pushed in that direction by an Atlantic Canadian high pressure system that will drain colder flow into the greater WMass region by Wednesday.
This means that our low temps tonight will likely remain where they are tomorrow.
Scattered showers are expected, though generally light in intensity with highs in the upper 30s to mid/upper 40s (cooler north, milder south).
This flow maximizes in the afternoon and early evening such that we may see some isolated areas developing freezing rain / ice glazing on surfaces along and north of Rt. 2 and at elevation in WMass and CMass, so a few slippery spots are possible Wednesday night.
It’s possible this doesn’t materialize but I am ALWAYS wary of cold air damming signals and with icing transpiring in Maine over the next 24 hours or so, I needed to mention the icing potential.
No matter, though, because low pressure will be tracking east toward Quebec and will take our back-door cold front Wednesday night and fling it northeast as a warm front for Thursday, causing temps to bounce back up into the 60s with warm frontal showers in the morning, ahead of a cold front that passes through late Thursday.
An area of showers and thunderstorms (non-severe) should move through as a result Thursday evening with lows dropping into the upper 30s to low 40s.
Then, The Springening begins!
Friday will be a bit blustery with northwest winds gusting and highs either side of 50º.
But the weekend looks calmer wind-wise with highs near 50º Saturday, and well into the 50s Sunday with sunshine both days, and then sunny and low to mid 60s on Monday!
Is winter weather completely done until late this year?
I can’t say that 100%, but the late-arriving winter pattern in late Feb into March is broken, and Spring conditions should surge going forward.
Have a great day!
BE KIND
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
