MORNING DISCUSSION
Good morning everybody, I hope you all slept well and are filled with vim, vigor and are ready to move mountains today.
Me? I’m set to stumble, drop and fall back asleep, how’s that for seizing the day! #CarpeSleepem
We’ve got some active on the weather, so let’s jump in.
We’re starting off very cold this morning, with temps in the low to mid 20s and even some upper teens were reported in SVT.
This is Winter’s last parting gift to us. Yes, we all know it can snow in April into mid-May based on history, but those kind of conditions are not in our foreseeable future.
High pressure will be moving off the east coast today, and as such will combine with low pressure well west of us tracking into the Great Lakes to produce southwesterly flow, which is a warming flow.
This will help temps come up into the 40s to perhaps 50º today with mostly sunny skies early.
Clouds are then expected to build in the afternoon as that southwest flow also pushes a warm front towards New England, which will bring first showers by late afternoon into early evening.
As temps cool into the evening, and with dry air in place before rain arrives, evaporative cooling will take place and briefly cool temps down, possibly allowing snow or sleet to mix into northern MA up into SVT and SWNH.
However, any wintry precip will A) Not last very long and change to rain later tonight B) Not cause much if any slippery conditions as it should melt on contact, and C) is probably the last wintry precip we’ll see until the next cold season (famous last words!).
Rain continues until about or just after midnight before we get a lull as the warm front moves through.
Patchy fog is expected in spots, and some drizzle as well with low temps in the mid to upper 30s happening around and before midnight, and then rising afterward.
With temps starting to rise, more rainfall arrives in a second round by dawn or just after, lasting throughout the morning and into early afternoon for some of us.
At this time, we’ll not only get another break in the action, but temps will shoot up into the low to mid 60s, especially if we get some partly sunny breaks in here.
This strong surface heating will steepen the lapse rates (i.e. gradient/difference of temperature from surface to sky), allowing not only southwest winds to gust 20-30mph for some of us, but will help fuel a line of strong thunderstorms marching east out of NY state towards sunset ahead of a cold front.
So expect a final line of showers and thunderstorms to push through around sunset, and some storms may contain strong gusty wind and/or small hail – hello Spring!
Lows Saturday night behind the cold front will fall into the upper 20s to low 30s.
By Sunday, a cold day for early April standards arrives, but we will be dry and mostly sunny with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s and northwest winds gusting 20-30mph. Lows will drop to the mid to upper 20s.
We warm right back up through much of next week with highs generally 55-60º in the high terrain and 60-65º in the Valley points south and east as Spring surges.
Fair weather likely for Monday, but once we get to Tuesday into Thursday, showery periods are possible, but it’s murky at the moment, so I will update you as we get closer!
Have a great day!
BE KIND
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
–Kurt Vonnegut
