MORNING DISCUSSION
Good morning everybody, I hope that 2023 is a year filled with health, love and all the good things in life for you and yours.
We have an unsettled and increasingly colder week ahead as a more seasonable air mass is driven into the greater WMass region by high pressure to our north and the breakdown of the eastern upper ridge that has induced our current version of The Mildening to come to pass.
For today, we’re in good shape, and I’d argue this is the pick of the first week of the new year, so get outside for a walk if you have the time.
The last vestiges of high pressure dominance brings us a mild early January day with highs well into the 40s, with a few spots hitting 50º with a light westerly wind.
We’ll see partly sunny skies on average with a bit more cloudiness in northwest MA and southwest VT. Skies may in fact be mostly sunny well east of the I-91 corridor.
For tonight, temps will drop into the upper 20s to mid 30s from north to south with clearer skies early, and then clouds will build ahead of a warm front that will lead to a very wet Tuesday afternoon and evening.
FREEZING RAIN VERY EARLY TUESDAY A.M.
However, by very early Tuesday morning, even during the later pre-dawn hours, a few showers may develop out ahead of the main precipitation clusters and it could be cold enough for some areas in northern MA, southern VT and southwest NH to start as freezing rain, which may cause some slick spots.
As the morning lengthens, temps will come up and rise into the mid 40s to low 50s with the steadier plain rain showers arriving by late morning into early afternoon, with heavier rain possible at times.
Patchy fog will be possible as well, and some of it could be dense in spots.
Rain and fog lasts into Tuesday evening, and then we should see a lull develop with the rain with lows in the mid 40s.
Wednesday morning looks overcast as we wait for the cold front and a wave along it to push back into the region, and bring more rainfall by Wednesday afternoon into the night.
WINTRY PRECIPITATION
Colder air will be pressing southward at the surface thanks to a surface drain of cold from northeastern New England down into northern parts of the greater WMass region by Wednesday afternoon.
This is going to cause a very tricky temperature forecast with some areas getting cold north of the Rt. 9 Massachusetts corridor with 30s and 40s, and staying mild south of it well into the 50s and maybe reaching 60º in Hartford.
Additionally, this means some areas may start start to mix with sleet or freezing rain, especially north of the Rt. 2 corridor in far northern MA, SVT and SWNH.
This lasts into the night and some slippery travel may develop with light ice accumulations.
Thursday and Friday are looking cold, with highs in the mid to upper 30s, lows in the 20s, and periods of rain, ice and snow, with light accumulations possible, but I will have to refine this part of the forecast as we get closer. Just know that for now, it’s looking more wintry than anything for the late-week period.
Beyond that, the weekend looks seasonably cold too, with similar temps to Thursday and Friday, but fair weather and sunshine is expected, which should last into next week.
No big storms are in sight, but we must keep an eye on the Wednesday afternoon through Friday period for wintry impacts.
Have a great day!

AND REMEMBER…
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
