Western Mass Regional Weather for September 30, 2022

Good morning folks, it’s cold outside! As I age, while the chub around my middle seems to grow, the subcutaneous skin fat that keeps one all toasty and warm in their youth melts away and the cold seeps in… as my ex-uncle-in-law once said about his wife hiding his booze on him, “that ain’t right”.

As for our weather, let me know whether or not you frosted overnight. Going forward, we have a nice day with increasing high and mid level clouds, and then we’re looking at some periods of rain tomorrow south of the Pike (especially in northern CT), with showers possibly up to the Rt. 2 corridor in northern MA, to be followed by a windy/cloudier day Sunday with a few showers in N.CT, and then fair but cool weather next week, but before we jump into the details, let’s check a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, with their newest location in West Springfield, MA.

WEATHER REPORT
Good morning everybody, is it me or is it weird to think about how much time we won’t be here in the world, like a REALLY long time.

A morbid thought, perhaps, but also one that helps me appreciate my time here and helps me to focus on how to spend some of that time while I have control over such things.

Anyway, with that bit of levity behind us, let’s jump into today’s double–dash proliferation event, while supplies last!

–We’ve got some patchy fog in the northern Berkshires and CMass and a few other spots, but that will evaporate as it does
–We’ll have a partly sunny day on average, as clouds thicken to the south and east sooner (we already have a thinner cloud deck over head)
–It’ll be brightest to the north and west, but Ian’s outflow will stream overhead today
–Highs will reach the low to mid 60s with lows in the mid 40s as clouds thicken
–For Saturday, the northern rain shield is expected to push north into southern New England, while a high pressure system flattens out and becomes more wide (west to east) than it is tall (north to south)
–This is going to provide a drying influence bleeding down from the north as precipitation pushes up from the south, setting up a fairly tight cutoff in the northern rain shield at the surface
–As of now, it looks like along and south of the Pike will see periods of rainfall tomorrow into Saturday night, especially in northern CT
–However, depending on the exact interaction between these 2 features, we could see rain showers push north to the Rt. 2 corridor and maybe even the MA-VT/NH state line for a time, with only a few showers or no rain north into SVT and SWNH
–I will keep you updated on the latest as we get closer, including an update late this afternoon and again tomorrow morning
–Highs on Saturday will only be in the mid 50s to low 60s with lows in the 40s
–As the high to our north and low/Ian to our south press into each other, we should see northeast winds develop and gust 20-30mph Sunday and Monday before slackening
–Sunday could see a few showers in northern CT but it should be drier with highs in the mid to upper 50s under mostly cloudy skies with lows in the upper 30s
–The remnants of Hurricane Ian (making its second U.S. landfall in SC this morning as a Category 1 storm) will split in two, with the convective, heavier precip side to the east bringing rain to us this weekend
–But after a fair Monday with sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s to low 60s, the second piece with the old low pressure center of Ian will depart east from the middle Appalachians and track off the coast which may spin up a weaker coastal low and bring some Tuesday showers to us with highs in the low 60s
–After that, it’s fair and cool weather with highs in the low to mid 60s, lows in the 40s with another cold front possible by late week

Have a great day, and I would welcome and be grateful for your support when my 2023 Weather Wall Calendar launches this weekend.

It’s got more local color, regional stories, and educational weather info in it than ever before, and I think you’ll really dig it, so keep an eye out, thanks!

AND REMEMBER…
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
