Western Mass Regional Weather for August 18, 2022

Good morning folks, we’ve got overnight showers drying up over southern VT and southwest NH this morning, with up to a quarter inch of rain received since midnight in the Keene/Monadnock corridor of NH down into N. Worcester County, and just a few hundredths of an inch in some parts of WMass and SVT.

To summarize, we’ve got wind on the way today as we dry up, with increasing heat and sunshine for Friday through Sunday with another chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms at some point during the Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning timeframe, but before we dive into all of the weather details below, let’s check a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, with their newest location in West Springfield, MA.

WEATHER REPORT
Good morning everybody, well we got a little bit of rain yesterday and overnight with northern CT getting the least, WMass/CMass seeing a few hundredths of an inch up to a third of an inch, and then SVT and SWNH seeing a quarter of an inch up to almost in inch of rain in the Wilmington, VT area, but some got nothing, and so the drought will continue.

How’s that for a chipper start to the day?

Actually, what I meant to say was that we’re going to get rainy nor’easters every third day that will drop one-half to one and a half inches of rainfall each time for the next month or so, and after each storm our favorite sandwich will show up lovingly packaged on our front stoop. #WishfulThinking

Anyway, The Bulletization Mobile(TM) is still running amok throughout my nervous system this morning, beeping like a banshee, and at this rate, I’m gonna need a TBM Extraction Device because this thing keeps burrowing deeper, and I’m not into it BUT, it does mean that a whole slew of double–dashes are coming your way, so look out below!

SUMMARY
–Our coastal storm now in the Gulf of Maine is lifting north-northeast and away from New England today
–The wraparound moisture on its western flank (a/k/a the cold conveyor belt of moisture) is what delivered some more light rain to our region overnight
–This is now drying up over southern VT, and is just about gone elsewhere in the region as support for atmospheric lift decreases
–Skies should remain mostly cloudy during today in our northern zones, but partly sunny skies are expected to develop in northern CT and up into portions of southern MA
–In the wake of the storm, and as high pressure starts to nose into the region from the west, gusty west to northwest winds will develop and blow to 20-30mph at times
–Highs will reach the mid 70s to mid 80s from north to south generally, though the highs in the southern Greens of VT should sit more around the 70º mark
–A few isolated showers are expected this afternoon as a cold pool of air floats overhead and helps to build up the cumulus cloud field across the greater WMass region, so if you see any dark cloud bellies floating your way, don’t be surprised if some drops drop out of them
–Lows tonight under clearing skies, calming winds, and with drier conditions advecting into the region will drop into the mid 50s to low 60s, leading to a lovely, crisp overnight period
–By Friday, we’re off to the races as the flow turns out of the west to southwest with time
–Expect mostly sunny skies and highs in the low to upper 80s with light wind and lows in the upper 50s to low 60s under partly cloudy skies
–The weekend is looking like classic Summah without the humidity!
–Mostly sunny skies, with tolerable humidity, and highs in the mid 80s to low 90s are expected during both days
–With mostly clear skies at night and lows in the low 60s, this means that all outdoor activities are a complete go!
–For Monday, we’ll see the Bermuda High wane in strength after a brief weekend wax/flex, which means temps will come down a bit as well
–Highs will reach the upper 70s to low 80s, and clouds will be building into the greater WMass region as an upper level trough is expected to track out of southern Canada and into the Great Lakes region
–This will bring what is called “lowering heights” meaning lower-than-average pressures in the mid levels of the atmosphere which equates to higher chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms
–In addition, our humidity will be on the increase, with dew points rising into the upper 60s to low 70s, so it will get quite muggy Monday and Tuesday
–So, we’ll likely see a couple periods of scattered showers and thunderstorms sometime during the Monday afternoon into Wednesday morning timeframe, but given the dry antecedent conditions, this does not look like a washout period
–Highs should hold in the upper 70s to low 80s through Wednesday, by which time we’ll be drying things out into the mid week period

That does it for now, my friends, I hope you have a great day!
