Western Mass Regional Weather for August 12, 2022

Good morning folks, we’re starting out with a cold front draped over central/eastern MA and down into eastern CT which will be tracking east and away. This has produced dew points in the 40s and 50s this morning and air temps in the 50s and 60s, giving us a nice start to the day.

We’ll see Canadian high pressure push into and through New England over the next several days with gorgeous weather, to be followed by some measure of unsettled conditions into the middle of next week that hopefully brings some much-needed rain to help alleviate our drought, but before we dive into all of the weather details below, let’s check a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, with their newest location in West Springfield, MA.

WEATHER REPORT
Good morning everybody, there’s a new air mass in town, and this writer couldn’t be more relieved, nor could I welcome it more. The only thing better would be a 2-day soaking rainstorm to get things going in the right direction.

Alas, we’ll have to wait until next week for some of that hopeful rain that Ray Mason sings about so beautifully.

It’s been a spell since I’ve digitall cast the double–dashes about like organizational confetti, and since I can tell you’re in the mood for them this Friday, I’m obliged to step forward and deliver!

SUMMAH-RY
–It’s sunny and nice out, the end
–I’m kidding! Although, this report *will* be in the shorter side given uncertainty about next week, and the string of fair weather days that lie ahead
–For today, an upper level trough swings east and away from the region, as surface high pressure builds in from southern Canada and the northern Great Lakes region
–It’ll be sunny (though a few clouds will be around in southern CMass and eastern CT early) with highs in the mid 70s to low 80s
–As drier air continues to advect into the region, calm wind will become light out of the northwest and north, with dew points (see attached chart) tanking into the 30s and 40s!!
–For reference, they had reached the mid to upper 70s during our last heat wave, so, yeah, crispy air is on the way
–Mostly clear skies are expected tonight with lows landing mostly in the low to mid 50s, with some upper 40s in southern VT and some upper 50s in northern CT
–For Saturday, expect a repeat with sunny skies and highs in the 75-80º range, a light north wind, and mostly clear skies at night with lows in the upper 40s to mid 50s
–Sunday is a touch warmer, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, tons of sun, and lows in the mid to upper 50s with partly cloudy skies expected
–By Monday, we’re going to be watching to see how an upper level trough interacts with surface high pressure to the north, and an upper ridge to the west
–This trough may close off into a closed upper low pressure system, but the question (as with all potential storms) is where does that happen geographically?
–We want it to happen enough to our west which would allow it to siphon moist, southerly air into New England while a high to our north funnels down cooler air at the surface
–This combined with a few disturbances in The Force (LUKE!!!!!!) dropping into the base of the trough would mean periods of rainfall next week starting late Monday and lasting into the mid-week timeframe #StarWarsNerd
–However, if that trough forms too far east and over us, we’re going to see little if any rain
–So stay tuned for updates as we get closer, as it’s too far off still to have any certainty
–One fairly certain piece to the puzzle is that temps look cool for mid August, only rising into the upper 60s to mid 70s during the day, and lows in the low 50s at night
–We may see some warming as this feature lifts out and away from the northeast U.S., but that wouldn’t be coming until next Friday or sometime the following weekend.

Also please remember that the Perseid Meteor Shower peaks tonight, so even though the full moon will mask some of those streaky lights, you will still be able to see some, especially if you look the west-northwest away from where the Moon will be rising this evening.

AND REMEMBER…
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
