Western Mass Weather for March 26, 2022 (updated 3:55pm)

[UPDATE] PERIODS OF SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING, MOSTLY ENDING BY MIDNIGHT… ISOLATED REPORTS OF HAIL RECEIVED… MAY STILL SEE AN ISOLATED T-STORM, BUT TEMPS HAVE BEEN TAMPED DUE TO MORE STRATIFORM CLOUD DECK, SO STORM THREAT IS LESSENED, ESPECIALLY THE FURTHER NORTH YOU GO… UPSLOPE SNOW SHOWERS DEVELOP BY SUNDAY MORNING IN THE BERKSHIRES AND SVT, LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS THERE BY MONDAY MORNING… 3:55pm Saturday…

Good afternoon folks, our upper level system with an associated surface low in eastern NY continues to track east into our region this afternoon.

Rain up to a quarter inch has fallen, and temps have been kept from rising past the upper 40s for the most part, with some low 50s in a few spots, and mid to upper 30s in other areas.

I have heard of a couple of small hail reports… have you seen any hail today?

More showers are tracking east with any thunderstorm activity mostly noted to our south, where the better instability and warmer temps lie, so it appears that south of the Pike into northern CT is the best chance for a thunder rumble this afternoon or early evening.

Snow has been mixing in with the rain over the western and northern Catskills of southeast NY well west of us, and while a few Berkshire or southern Green high elevation spots may mix with snow this evening, it’s a low chance.

All precip mostly comes to an end by midnight, and then by morning after tonight’s cold front passes east of us, we should see some upslope snow showers develop over the Taconics, Berkshires and southern Greens in VT.

Highs will be in the mid 30s to mid 40s tomorrow under partly sunny skies in the Pioneer Valley points south and east, but with mostly cloudy skies and periods of snow showers in southern VT, the Berkshires, western hilltowns and Taconics, where light accumulations are possible in spots.

Have a great evening, folks, and if you’d like to support my work here before my 2022 Member/Support Drive ends tomorrow night, just click the secure link below. Any contribution helps, large, small, one-time, monthly… all I can say is THANK YOU.

ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS, SMALL HAIL, GRAUPEL, SUNSHINE, BUBBLING CLOUDS, SHOWERS, BRIEF DOWNPOURS, CREPUSCULAR RAYS, DARK CLOUD BELLIES, SNOW SHOWERS: WE’VE GOT IT ALL ACROSS THE GREATER WMASS REGION TODAY, FOLKS… MY ANNUAL MEMBER DRIVE ENDS TOMORROW (LINKS BELOW)… 9:05AM SATURDAY…

Good morning everybody, we have a pretty dynamic weather day across the region – nothing severe, really, but the variety of expected weather conditions is notable.

To start, we have a beautiful morning underway with plenty of sunshine, and temps in the 30s and 40s and highs will reach up into the mid 40s north to low to mid 50s south, with most of us in the upper 40s to low 50s in the WMass region.

Early star shine set within the cosmic firmament gives way to bubbling clouds as instability develops aloft, and first showers may get in here by very late morning into early afternoon.

Clouds will certainly be developing by then (and already are in the Berkshires). We can expect that the afternoon will turn into a mostly cloudy day with some peeks of sunshine.

Scattered showers of varying intensities, along with a few isolated thunderstorms capable of producing some gusty winds and small hail or graupel will roll through parts of the region as well this afternoon.

Some get spritzed, some get drenched, you get the idea.

For this evening, snow may mix with rain showers into the Berkshires, Litchfields, Taconics and southern VT, possibly the western hilltowns, but as times goes on, shower activity should diminish overnight, and lows should drop into the low to mid 30s as a cold front swings through. We can’t even rule out an isolated snow squall.

Sunday will be about 10 degrees cooler with highs in the mid 30s to mid 40s with less shower activity across most of the region, except for the western highlands (southern Greens, western hilltowns, Berkshires, Litchfields, Taconics) where we should see some upslope snow showers.

By Monday morning, some towns in these regions will see a coating to an inch of new snow, and the southern Greens may actually see more like 1-4″!

For the rest of us in the valley points south and east in MA, CT and southwest NH, we should see more isolated showers, with a mix of sun and clouds.

A cold front comes through tomorrow late afternoon, and west winds will gust up to 30mph, as Arctic air overspreads the region at night.

TASTE OF WINTER
We’re going see temps plummet and furnaces kick on and wood stoves light up (if we’re so fortunate) Sunday night as temps crash into the mid teens to low 20s, and with west winds gusting to 30mph, some wind chills will get down to the single digits above and below zero by Monday at dawn, so bundle up!

Monday is mid-winter for a day and a night: partly sunny, blustery, highs in the low 20s to low 30s from north to south, and with lows in the teens at night.

Tuesday we turn the corner into a two-day fair weather stretch with moderating temps.

Expect mostly sunny skies Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the 30s Tuesday and in the 40s Wednesday with lows in the 20s Tuesday night and near freezing Wednesday night as clouds increase.

More showers arrive late Wednesday night into Thursday with highs climbing back toward the 50s.

Then we have to watch the first week in April as we have two storm signals that could potentially be wintry, so I’d hold off until the 2nd week in April before taking the snow tires off the cars, if you haven’t already.

Obviously, those storms aren’t a lock and are VERY low probability, but the signals are pretty consistent at this range, so it’s something to watch.

That does it folks, but please post any reports below today, and I will update again around 4pm.

Also, if my work has any import for you, your chance to help underpin this resource is ending tomorrow as my Member Drive concludes, and I’m still a bit over 20% off form reaching my goal of 4% of readers contributing whatever you can.

If you could chip in with your neighbors that have already joined, I’d be so grateful, just click the secure link below, thank you so much.
