[CLIPPER UPDATE] RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS TONIGHT WITH LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS, MOSTLY IN THE SOUTHERN GREENS AND ALONG THE ROUTE 2 CORRIDOR… 3:40PM TUES
Good afternoon folks, I hope you are doing well when you read this, we have a weak Clipper low pressure system tracking east along northern NY into northern New England.
This will sweep a broad area of modest rising air through the greater WMass region, inducing light to moderate precipitation in the form of rain and snow showers, the steadiest of which will fall between roughly 7pm and midnight.
As of the 3 o’clock hour we have some rain showers mainly focused over the Mass Pike in southern MA and northern CT, but we have a few rain and snow showers up in southern VT as well, and also in the Berkshires.
Some parts of our WMass region are seeing virga, which is precipitation in the cloud level that evaporates before reaching the ground, given rather steep dewpoint depressions in place (a DPD is simply the difference between the air temp and dewpoint temp… once it reaches double digits, it generally means air is very dry and it will take time for precip to reach the groun).
As the system moves through during the rest of the afternoon, the atmosphere will moisten up, rain and snow showers will continue to develop, and temps will slowly drop, landing in the 25-30º range overnight.
This means that even areas that just saw rain or mixed snow and rain with no accumulation may have some black ice issues to deal with very early Wednesday morning.
As for amounts, a coating to an inch in the Berkshires, western hilltowns, Rt. 2 corridor and SVT and SWNH looks proper, with 1-3″ in the southern Green Mountains in the terrain of eastern Bennington and western Windham Counties.
I hope you have a great rest of your evening, and if you see light accumulations tonight, watch out for any slick spots during travel.

DISCUSSION:
Good morning everybody, we’re still here, we’re still up and taking nourishment as my Dad is famous for saying, so let’s make the best we can of the day, and as Kurt Vonnegut would approve, try to be kind to others and yourself.
As for our weather, we have a couple of weak systems that could bring a coating to an inch of snow accumulation to the Rt. 2 corridor in northern WMass and CMass, points north into SWNH and SVT, with some coatings in the Berkshires, too, both for tonight and tomorrow night.
The southern Greens could actually see up to 2 or 3″ tonight, with areas south of Rt. 2 seeing a mix of rain and snow showers, and just plain rain showers from Westfield to Worcester points south into northern CT overnight, ending by midnight or so.
Before that first Clipper floats over us, highs will reach the mid 30s to low 40s from north to south under mostly cloudy skies with gusty southerlies blowing 15-30mph at times by afternoon and early evening.
Lows tonight amidst the rain and snow showers will dip into the mid 20s to low 30s from north to south as precip ends after midnight and we get a break in between these light systems.
For Wednesday, we’ll get a decent partly to mostly sunny day with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s with clouds increasing again later in the day.
Our second Clipper system will move in with a cold front hot on its heels (cold on its heels?) and will bring more snow showers to the region tomorrow night, as colder air works in with lows in the 20s. Again, a coating to an inch is possible the further north you go in the WMass region up into SVT/SWNH.
In other words, No Big Whoop.
Thursday and Friday will feature cold Canadian air and high pressure building into the region to produce a pair of sweet late-Winter days with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 20s to low 30s.
Lows with strong radiational cooling will be quite cold Thursday night into early Friday morning, dipping into the single digits, with lows in the teens on Friday night.
The weekend is mixed, with a good start on Saturday under partly sunny skies and highs well into the 30s. Clouds will increase early Saturday evening, and we could see a period of snow or ice during the pre-dawn hours of Sunday morning, turning to rain later Sunday morning as highs soar into the mid to upper 40s behind a warm frontal passage, with highs in the 50s for a day on Monday.
That’s how it looks for now folks! Rabbit Rabbit, Happy Met Spring Day, and I hope you have a great day, and if you like my work, I would welcome your support during my annual member drive to help keep it going into the future, thank you!
