BRUTAL COLD TONIGHT… A SUNNY AND TEMPERATE TUESDAY ON THE WAY… STILL EYEING POTENTIAL SNOW FOR FRIDAY… 6:50PM TUESDAY…
Good evening everybody, thanks so much for all of those incredible sunset pics earlier, it’s awesome to be able to see what you all saw from across the entire region! Some real stunners in there!
As for tonight, we have some serious cold on the way given very dry air, and slackening light winds.
In fact, temps are already in the single digits in parts of Bennington County VT, with teens in the rest of SVT, SWNH, Berkshires, and parts of the Pioneer Valley into northern CMass, and 20s elsewhere.
Very chilly lows will develop overnight, down into the single digits for much of the Berkshires, western hilltowns, SVT, SWNH, and low to mid teens elsewhere, so bundle up if you’re out late or up early! Skies will be clearing.
For Tuesday, high pressure works northeast slowly toward the region, which will push the coastal low away and out at sea, and produce mostly sunny skies.
Temps will be a tad colder than originally thought yesterday and this morning, and should reach the mid 20s to mid 30s from SVT through WMass and into northern CT (colder north, milder south) with lows dropping to either side of 20º.
For Wednesday, that high pressure system scoots south of us, putting us into milder southwest flow. Meanwhile, a storm will be tracking into southwest Quebec, pushing a warm front through our region.
This means that some morning mixed showers will give way to scattered rain showers as highs climb into the upper 30s to low 40s with lows in the mid/upper 20s.
Thursday will then see a cold front swing through associated with our eastward-tracking Quebec low. We should eek out a partly sunny day on Thursday, and temps will be tolerable, reaching the upper 20s to mid/upper 30s for highs, before bottoming out into the upper teens to mid 20s ahead of our potential coastal snowstorm.
As for our potential snowstorm, the position and track of strong high pressure in south-central Canada down into the northern Plains will help position the upper level trough and the surface low center that would be responsible for guiding a surface low just south of us to produce snowfall, or pushing it further south, just grazing or missing us.
As of now this storm may have enough amplitude by getting just east of the upper trough to track northeast, just south of Nantucket (a/k/a The Benchmark, or 40ºN/70ºW). This scenario would produce a plowable snowfall across the WMass region.
However, a flatter track is still possible, which would mean less snow for us. I don’t really see this becoming an inside runner, which would create snow to rain – I think it’s either a hit, a graze south, or out to sea, but I am leaning towards at least some accumulating snowfall. We do know that it’s a progressive system, meaning there will be nothing to slow it down – it’ll be in and out in time for the weekend.
Speaking of the weekend, Saturday looks like the weekend pick, but it’ll be cold with sunshine and highs in the 20s.
It’ll be milder Sunday with some mixed showers possible, and highs in the 30s, before an Arctic air mass blasts into the region by early next week. That’s the way it looks now.

WEATHER BULLETIN
–Any snow freaks out there may want to drive to Hyannis right now and catch the ferry over to Nantucket where over half a foot of snow will fall today with 2-4″ on the Vineyard by tonight!
–Otherwise, for us here in the WMass region, that coastal storm sliding ENE off of the Carolinas will miss the greater WMass region to the south, though we can’t rule out a few snow showers in northeast CT
–Expect partly sunny skies on average north and west, with thicker clouds down in north-central and northeast CT on up to the Rt. 9 corridor in MA, and possibly even north of that
–Highs will only reach the low to mid 20s today, with maybe some upper 20s in northern CT
–Clouds clear tonight as the storm slides out to sea, and lows will drop into the upper single digits to mid teens from north to south
–We can’t rule out some north wind gusts to 20mph as high pressure works in from the west, impinging on the departing low and creating a mild pressure gradient, which produces wind
–For Tuesday, we’ve got the pick of the week!
–Sunny skies, highs in the low to mid 30s, and light wind, so make sure to cast your punum skyward and warm up the cheeks of your life (your face cheeks, that is!)
–Lows Tuesday night will drop into the low to mid 20s under partly cloudy skies
–High pressure continues to track and pass us to the east, which will put us into a warming flow on Wednesday
–This will also introduce a few more clouds, and showers by afternoon as a warm front works through the region
–Highs will reach the low to mid 40s for Wednesday, and as mentioned, afternoon showers will last into the first part of the night, drying out later with lows near freezing
–On Thursday a cold front sweeps through with partly sunny skies which will produce highs back into the 30s, with clouds increasing late
–Then we watch a storm system that will have dipped a bit more south and will be tracking more southwest to northeast, rather than west to east
–This will allow it to gather some more moisture, and with cold-enough air in place ahead of its arrival, if it tracks right, we could have a moderate to possibly major snowstorm in the WMass region for Thursday night into Friday, so stay tuned for updates
–It’s not a lock by any stretch, but the potential is there
–The weekend looks calmer and milder, with a few showers by Sunday
