WIND CHILLS IN THE HIGH SINGLE DIGITS TO TEENS TODAY, VERY BLUSTERY, GUSTY AND COLD FOR OUR SATURDAY AFTER FOR MANY THE FIRST ACCUMULATING SNOW OF THE INCOMING WINTER SEASON WITH UP TO 10″ OF SNOW IN SOME SPOTS IN THE WESTERN AND NORTHWESTERN FRINGES OF THE GREATER WMASS REGION… ANOTHER LIGHT SNOWFALL IS ON THE WAY TOMORROW NIGHT INTO EARLY MONDAY, THEN FAIR WEATHER NEXT WEEK… PLEASE POST YOUR WINTER WONDERLAND PICS BELOW! 7:45AM SAT…
Good morning everybody, thanks so much for all of your road condition reports, travel experiences, snow totals, and weather condition reports last night from around the region, it helps paint the picture for me and everybody else as to the variations in experiences, which can vary WIDELY as we know across our region given all the terrain orientations, elevation differences, etc. in western MA and surrounding counties.
Except for a few lake effect flurries in the Taconics, Berkshires and SVT, the snow has departed and we’re left with partly to mostly cloudy skies.
The biggest surprise from last night’s snowfall was the more robust snow shield that developed east of the CT River and west of the Worcester/Fitchburg zone, where I thought a coating to 2″ would fall, but more like 1-4″ fell, overall.
The Pioneer Valley, which I not-so-affectionately call the Western Mass Snow Lover’s Triangle of Disappointment (draw a line from Greenfield to Wilbraham to Westfield and back up to Greenfield) just saw a few snow showers, as this event was elevation-dependent relying upsloping or orographic uplift, which means air that gets forced to rise up the slopes of broader areas of mountains and hills, and when it does, causes snow to fall.
Anyway, please post your winter wonderland pics this morning if you got ’em!
For outages, we’ve got about 1000 along the Taconics in eastern NY, and about 1500 in Worcester County, otherwise we’re in pretty good shape.
WEATHER GOING FORWARD
For today, westerly and northwesterly winds will still gust 25-35mph at times, driving wind chills down into the teens for much of the day with highs only in the upper 20s to mid/upper 30s. Watch out for areas of blowing snow in the high terrain, which may reduce visibilities for a time where snow pack exists.
A full-on winter day for many of us across the region, especially those with fresh snow pack!
For tonight, high pressure moves closer, relaxes the pressure gradient, and hence our winds will calm down but some breezy conditions are still possible with lows in the upper teens to low 20s under partly cloudy skies, with the vast, deep, quiet, inconceivable Cosmos behind that.
On Sunday, clouds will be increasing as another storm system will be tracking east through the Great Lakes/Ohio Valley region and will spawn a secondary storm off of the Mid-Atlantic coast Sunday night, likely too far out to sea to give us a sizable snowstorm here.
However, enough energy with the primary storm will work through the region Sunday night into early Monday to likely produce a coating to 2″ of new snow everywhere, not just the high terrain, with lows in the mid to upper 20s.
Monday morning will start off snowy, and some rain may mix in over the southern Pioneer Valley, but our weak storm will be exiting to the east, and a partly sunny day will develop with highs in the 30s.
It will be frigid Monday night with lows in the mid teens to low 20s!
We are sure are getting a wintry taste as we head into the first day of Meteorological Winter which passes on December 1, Wednesday.
Aside from another frontal boundary passage on Wednesday night with some scattered rain and snow showers, Tuesday through Friday generally looks like a period of fair weather with at least partly sunny skies and highs in the 30s and 40s with lows in the 20s to near freezing.
Have a great day, and stay warm, and post those pics, thanks!
