DISCUSSION:
I hope things go well for you today! We’ve got high pressure over the North Atlantic Ocean, as well as covering the entire Central Plains of the U.S., and sandwiched in between is a vertically stacked, occluded low pressure system centered over the Great Lakes, barely moving anywhere.
As this low sits and spins counterclockwise, it continues to drive southerly, moist, warm flow up the entire eastern seaboard and right into New England. This will continue today, tonight, and into our Friday as well, providing increasing showers by tonight, with scattered showers during the day.
In addition, this warm flow will drive temps into the 75-80º range with dewpoints well into the 60s, so it’ll feel more like late summer than early Autumn.
In addition, as the low slowly tracks northeast and pushes its cold front and conveyor belt of northward-tracking showers and thunderstorms towards New England, the pressure gradient will increase, and we should see southerly to southeasterly winds gusting 20-30mph by afternoon, and overnight.
As mentioned, showers and some thunderstorms will increase in coverage tonight, and we can’t rule out a strong to severe thunderstorm with heavy rain, and strong gusty winds as the front approaches, with the heaviest rain falling after midnight and during the first part of Friday morning.
Lows will hang in the low to mid 60s tonight with patchy fog late. Expect a rainy night overnight, and some areas could see over an inch of rainfall by tomorrow noon.
For Friday, showers, downpours, and thunderstorms in the morning, will taper off by early afternoon, and drier, cooler air will start to press into the region from behind the front as it slowly tracks east.
Highs will reach the upper 60s to low 70s as the wrapped-up low pulls cooler/drier air in from the southwest, an unusual direction from which we’ll be sourcing this more autumnal air mass. It will be mostly cloudy, but some sunny periods are possible late day.
Lows Friday night will drop into the upper 40s to low 50s, with drier air moving in under partly cloudy skies.
The weekend generally looks nice, with partly to mostly sunny skies, highs in the mid 60s to low 70s, and lows either side of 50º with a few spot showers possible by Sunday.
Early next week looks cooler with highs in the 65-70º range and some showers possible by Tuesday.
Have a great day!
