Western Mass Weather for September 9, 2021

6:55A-THURS: POSSIBLE BRIEF TORNADO TOUCH DOWN IN SOUTHEAST TOLLAND COUNTY CT NEAR COVENTRY A FEW HOURS AGO… PLEASE POST ANY REPORTS IF YOU ARE DOWN THAT WAY… PERIODS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL REDEVELOP ACROSS THE REGION TODAY IN THE AFTERNOON, WITH SOME SHOWERS THIS MORNING IN SPOTS… HEAVIEST RAIN WILL GENERALLY FALL EAST OF THE I-91 CORRIDOR IN NE.CT AND CMASS… RAIN QUITS TONIGHT, A FEW SHOWERS FRIDAY, THEN A SUNNY, NICE WEEKEND…

Good morning everybody, it appears that a brief spin-up may have touched down near Coventry, CT, in the South St/Bunker Hill area. That was not expected, at all, but developed within a storm cluster that gained strength around 3am or 3:30am southwest of that area, and had a brief, moderately-strong rotational signature before relaxing into Windham County CT.

Please post any reports below if you live in that area or know people that do and that you’ve spoken with. I hope everybody is ok down there.

We’ve got more rainfall in the form of showers and thunderstorms to deal with today, and it will fall heavily at times in the afternoon, especially east of the I-91 corridor.

We’ll jump into more detail below, but first let’s get a word from our sponsor to kick off the new work week.

DISCUSSION
A brief supercell formed around 3-4am and dissipated fairly quickly but was enough to cause some localized wind damage in the Coventry, CT area this morning, and may have touched down a weaker tornado.

In the bigger picture, we have a cold front working through the region today, connected to a storm well north of us, and an upper trough pressing in from our northwest. In addition, low pressure is expected to develop along the slow-moving surface cold front today, and ride along it from south to north.

All of these features will combine to produce copious lift in the atmosphere, and generate additional periods of showers, downpours and some thunderstorms.

Coverage will be scattered this morning, though a few longer periods of rain are possible.

However, by afternoon and certainly this early evening, rainfall should become more widespread, and heavier especially east of the I-91 corridor. Another half inch to 2″ of rain may fall by midnight tonight when things should be starting to wind down.

It’ll be quite humid today, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, and lows tonight in the mid to upper 50s.

For Friday, that upper trough has to swing through northern New England on its way out of the region.

This will beget numerous clouds, and produce a partly sunny day on average, with the potential for a bit more clouds than sun, along with a few scattered showers, but nothing expected like last night and today/tonight.

Highs will reach the mid 60s to low 70s as cooler and drier air filters into the region behind cold front, with a downright CHILLY Friday night with lows only in the 45-50º range! Skies should be clear.

For the weekend, we’re going to enjoy perfect timing, as high pressure builds into the region. This will produce mostly sunny skies both days with highs 70-75º Saturday and lows in the 50s, and highs 75-80º on Sunday with lows in the low 60s.

It’s hard to get much more late summery goodness than that!

For next week, we’re likely entering into a more zonal flow (west to east across the country), and so there will be some frontal passages and shower chances, but they’re not all that clear right now. What is clear is that high temps should remain in the 70s to near 80º through the period.

Have a great day!
