ALERT: FLASH FLOOD WATCHES HAVE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE ENTIRE WMASS REGION… ANTICIPATED BAND OF HEAVIEST RAIN WILL SLIDE MORE SOUTHERLY TO INCLUDE NOT ONLY SVT AND SWNH, BUT ALSO WMASS INTO CMASS… 4:50pm Sunday…
Good afternoon everybody, unfortunately the thing we don’t need anymore of is visiting upon us again – more heavy rainfall. It’s tough when the punches keep rolling in, but that’s what we’re dealing with. This pattern will eventually change, but it’s not right now, so into the news I go.
A warm front to our south is slowly lifting north and focusing more rainfall across the region. Meanwhile the upper level jet stream is in a favorable region over southern New England providing deep atmospheric lift, which is resulting in rainfall breaking out across the region this mid/late afternoon.
Rain will fall heavily at times this evening, overnight and into Monday with 1-3″ of rainfall possible, along with flash flooding in spots given that the Housatonic at Falls Village, CT and the Hoosic River at Williamstown both already went into minor flood stage from Tropical Storm Elsa’s passage.
Saturated soils, swollen rivers and streams and heavy rainfall will combine to produce street flooding, and flash flooding of some streams and rivers.

FLASH FLOOD WATCHES ARE POSTED FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN VT… SHOWERS ARRIVE THIS EVENING AND ESPECIALLY OVERNIGHT INTO MONDAY WHICH LOOKS QUITE RAINY, ESPECIALLY ALONG AND NORTH OF THE RT. 2 CORRIDOR IN NORTHERN MA UP INTO SOUTHERN VT AND SOUTHWEST NH… COOL EARLY THIS WEEK, THEN A WARM FRONT MAKES IT NORTH OF US AND WARM MID TO LATE WEEK… HUMID THE WHOLE WAY, THOUGH NOT ALWAYS OPPRESSIVELY SO… NEXT WEEKEND MAY DRY OUT AND COOL SLIGHTLY… 7:00am Sun
Good morning everybody, I hope you’re having a good weekend. I got to see some old college friends last night who just moved back to the area, and it was awesome to reconnect.
After a few patches of morning fog burn off, we’re going to have a mostly dry Sunday, but clouds will be building in after some morning sunny breaks (especially east of the I-91 corridor), and a few spot shower will be possible by late afternoon and into the evening.
Highs will reach the 75-80º mark, and we’re going to have to get used to humid conditions with flexes of higher humidity arriving by mid to late this week.
For tonight, a warm front will lift towards the region, and will focus heavier rainfall over parts of our region, especially along and north of Rt. 2 in northern MA, southern VT and southwestern NH.
We will see scattered showers, some heavy south of the Rt. 2 corridor for sure, but heaviest falls in our northern zones.
This has prompted Flash Flood Watches to be hoisted by the NWS for southern VT.
Of particular concern is the Walloomsac River in Bennington, VT and the Hoosic River in Williamstown, MA, especially the latter, given previous rainfall and resultant heavier streamflows. The Hoosic hasn’t totally receded yet, so this my main concern for flash flooding overnight tonight into Monday.
Lows tonight bottom out in the low to mid 60s with patchy fog late.
Monday looks rainy, folks, so pack the galoshes, the ‘brellas, and the rain coats. Highs will only reach the upper 60s to low 70s as a shortwave zips along the warm front and then presses it southward during our showery day. And if that wasn’t enough, let’s do some more showers for Monday night, you know, for the good times (lows in the low to mid 60s).
For Tuesday, we have one more cool day before we warm up mid to late week into more typical summer time conditions.
Highs will again only reach the upper 60s to low 70s, and some scattered showers will be possible with the front to our south. Lows will be in the mid 60s.
By Wednesday, our warm front lifts back and to the north of us, opening up the heat pump from high pressure parked over the western Atlantic. Humidity will pump as well, hooray! #NOT
The Wednesday through Saturday timeframe looks fairly similar, with warming temps into the low to mid 80s Wednesday and the mid to upper 80s Thursday through Saturday. Lows will be in the 60s.
What will characterize this period will be slow-moving, weak-shear scattered thunderstorms each afternoon, along some showers and downpours.
However, these will be isolated to scattered, so washouts are expected… yet.
Sunday may cool a bit more with a cold frontal passage, but I will update as we get closer.
Have a great day!
