Western Mass Weather for June 26, 2021

HEAT ADVISORIES LIKELY TO BE HOISTED AS EARLY AS SUNDAY, BUT ESPECIALLY FOR MON-WED WHICH WILL BE THE CORE OF OUR 2ND HEAT WAVE THIS WARM SEASON… AN ISOLATED SHOWER CAN’T BE RULED OUT INTO MONDAY, BUT LIKELY DRY FOR SAT-MON… BY TUESDAY, AN INCREASED CHANCE FOR ISOLATED SHOWERS, DOWNPOURS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE PRESENT FOR EACH AFTERNOON TUES-FRI… THE HEAT WAVE BREAKS BY THURSDAY OR FRIDAY AT THE LATEST AS THE BERMUDA HIGH GETS SQUASHED SOUTH AND EAST ONCE AGAIN, AND MORE SEASONABLE TEMPS ARRIVE FOR THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND… 7:30AM SAT…

Good morning everybody, a serious Summer stretch is on the way starting today, as surface high pressure builds over the western Atlantic Ocean and kicks southwesterly flow into our region, carrying with it increased heat and humidity, as well as south to southwest wind gusts of 20-25mph today and tomorrow.

At least those breezes will tamp the muggy heat for the weekend, though after that, Monday through Wednesday looks like a scorchah, I says!!

For today, we’re starting off with more clouds than sunshine but it looks like we could get some partly sunny periods to develop for our Saturday.

Highs should reach the low to mid 80s at least, with some upper 80s possible in the Springfield/Hartford heat sink, as I like to call it.

The CT River Valley widens out down that way, and it seems to act as a heat trap for southwestern New England.

In addition, a shower or two can’t be ruled out this afternoon or evening. It will also be increasingly humid, with dewpoints rising into the 65-70º range.

Any shower activity should generally stay to our north through Monday for the most part, as our upper level ridge across the eastern U.S. flexes, and directs inclement weather north, up and around its northwestern flank which will extend more and more deeply throughNew England this weekend and next week.

For tonight, lows will drop into the mid 60s to low 70s and humidity will persist.

We’re entering the soup today, folks, but tomorrow through Wednesday will turn out to be #PeakSoupTimes.

On Sunday, we’ll again experience southwesterly breezes kicking up to over 20mph at times. Temps will climb from today, reaching the mid 80s to low 90s with high humidity dewpoints reaching the low 70s. Lows again will only sit down into the upper 60s to low 70s.

This will be the start of the heat wave for some across our region, which will last AT LEAST until Wednesday, if not until Thursday before relenting.

So if you work outside, or suffer from respiratory issues, or are prone to heat illnesses, you must prepare yourself for hydration and cooling as much as possible.

You know that wilted, rubbery piece of bok choy in the bottom of your fridge, along with the old dried out veg matter in the crisper?

That’ll be me this week.

I’ll spare you the pictures.

You’re welcome.

Monday through Wednesday looks hot and very humid, as the ridge and high pressure systems set up in peak position to deliver the heat to southern New England (Monday dewpoint temps are shown in the attached graphic).

Highs should reach the upper 80s to mid 90s all three days from high terrain to low terrain areas, and it will be VERY humid with dewpoint temps rising into the upper 60s to mid 70s! Lows will also only be in the upper 60s to low 70s, so either fans will be whirring, ACs will be humming, or you will be perspirating.

Heat Advisories will likely be hoisted for much of the region during these three days, and I could imagine HAs being raised for smaller coverage areas on Sunday and Thursday.

Thursday is our transition day, as a more zonal flow sets up, bulldozing the southwesterly flow into a more westerly flow.

Highs should reach the mid 80s to low 90s Thursday, and showers and thunderstorms will be possible in the afternoon, with lows in the 65-70º range.

The late week period into the weekend features some frontal boundary passages with cooling temperatures into the 70s and 80s with a break in the humidity.

However, there may be more in the way of rainfall over the holiday weekend, so stay tuned for updates as we get closer.

If you’re a Summer Lover, your time has come.

Have a great day!
