Western Mass Weather for December 21, 2020

[DENSE FOG ADVISORY W/ FREEZING FOG ENDS 9AM FOR WMASS, CMASS, AND NORTHERN CT… BE CAREFUL IF TRAVELING EARLY THIS MORNING… HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE WHICH JUST OCCURRED AT 5:02AM… THE LIGHT RETURNETH AS THE GREAT CONJUNCTION OCCURS IN THE SOUTHWEST SKY TONIGHT WITH SATURN AND JUPITER APPEARING AS ONE SINGLE BRIGHT, ELONGATED STAR… PRAY FOR THE CLOUDS TO PART, PEOPLE… LOW CHANCE, BUT IT’S POSSIBLE! 7:00AM MONDAY]

Good morning folks, it’s a double–dash kind of morning. Make no mistake about it, double–dashes convenient, they’re inexpensive, there’s no annual dues, no hidden fees, they carry a 0% interest rate, they show up to work when expected, they get the job done, they’re fortified, nutrified, AND good for you, they don’t talk back, and they stand up and do what needs to be done, when what needs to be done, needs to be done.

SUMMARY
–Happy Winter Solstice! The shortest day and longest night have arrived, sunrise at 7:14am and sunset at 4:25pm means 9 hours 11 minutes of daylight and 14 hours and 49 minutes of darkness
–We also have the Great Conjunction tonight, a visible combination of Jupiter and Saturn appearing as one star, which hasn’t been visible to our eyes in almost 800 years!
–Let’s pray for a break in the cloud deck, because it’s not looking like we’re going to have a high chance of clearing, but let’s hold out hope
–For this morning, freezing fog is dense in a few places, most notably north-central CT
–Some roadways are going to be icy so give yourself extra time and be careful out there
–For today, after the freezing fog threat abates, patchy fog may still lower visibilities for some this morning as highs reach the mid to upper 30s under mostly cloudy skies, with some sunny breaks late
–For tonight, look to the southwest sky and hope for a break in the clouds so we can see the Great Conjunction!
–Lows will be in the mid to upper 20s with more patchy freezing fog possible
–For Tuesday, another partly sunny to mostly cloudy day is on tap with highs again in that 35-40º range, with lows in the low 20s
–On Wednesday, we get a legit mostly sunny, high pressure day with highs in the mid to upper 30s with lows in the 20s
–For Thursday, we will cloud back up, and be watching the approach of a strong cold front with heavy rain running south to north ahead of it
–This will drive high temps into the low 50s, which is unseasonably mild for late December
–The timing is still not clear for when the rain arrives
–Regardless, Christmas Eve looks rainy and windy at the moment, and we will have to see how quickly that rain and wind ships out of here on Christmas Day, possibly before noon
–We may get a quick change to snow on the back side out in the Litchfields, Taconics land Berkshires with a few coatings before it leaves our hills and dales
–Christmas Night looks very cold, as does the weekend, as Winter rushes right back into the WMass region
–Next chance for stormy weather is early/mid next week, and snow would be possible, I will keep an eye on it

Have a great day!
