Good afternoon everybody, it’s been a wild day with snowfall accumulating in Enfield, Longmeadow and Chicopee, but bupkis in Northampton and points north, which is the opposite of what happens, welcome to my world!!! LOL.
Of course, as advertised it’s been ripping in CMass and we’ve got accumulations of 3-6″ or so in Worcester County and it’s still coming down hard at times.
We even just got a report of thundersnow in Auburn, MA from the NWSBoston office!
We also have light to moderate snow falling in the high terrain of WMass, as well as snow in portions of central Hampden County, yet just rain or mixed rain and snow in other parts of that county, and rain in the central valley near Northampton with mixed snow on occasion.
CMASS AND EASTERN PARTS OF WMASS SNOW BAND
Our main precipitation/snow band is now setting up as our broad area of low pressure approaches south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island.
This band is compressing northwestward into eastern portions of the Pioneer Valley as of 2pm and should generally stay east of the I-91 corridor. This will cause moderate to heavy snow to develop from there, and especially eastward into central MA this afternoon.
Snow will fall heavily at times with additional accumulations through the afternoon and this evening, heaviest in eastern Hampden County and northeast into Worcester County.
Power outages will continue to develop across eastern Hampden County and especially in Worcester County.
ACCUMULATIONS
I will post my thoughts on snow amounts from early this morning before the storm got cranked up in our region, and you can find where I was right and where I was wrong in my thinking.
Pick me apart!
I can take it, because I’m a pretty big dude, and I need to lose some weight! Seriously, take at least SOME of me, please! ;-)
In all seriousness, I suspect in terms of snow amounts I put in below, if they are along and west of the CT River, will come in at the low ranges, but you tell me what you have in your yard, assuming you measured it with a ruler of some sort.
So… what’s happening in your neck of the woods at this point in the afternoon?
I will post again toward sunset, but we’re starting to wind down along and west of the CT River with this system, and will continue to monitor east of the CT River for additional snow impacts.
We did get some healthy rainfall from this system with half an inch over an inch of rain having fallen overnight and today, so watch those puddles and ponding on the roads if you’re out and about! I’ll update before dinner time!
SNOW AMOUNTS FROM 7AM:
–With a slightly flatter track, I just don’t see how the Pioneer Valley floor from Brattleboro down through Northampton/Springfield and into Hartford will see more than light snow accumulations of 1-3″, maybe a 4″ amount here and there, but I think we could underperform in the valley. It’s just too mild and the heaviest precip should pass east of here, BUT if I’m wrong, then we could see more 3s and 4s even in the valley
–I think this 1-4″ can be expected in the Taconics of eastern NY, western Berkshire County in the Housatonic Valley up into Bennington VT and southwest VT, which is further from heavy precip
–The high terrain in the WMass western hilltowns, northern Litchfields, southern VT from the Greens through the Brattleboro area and into western Cheshire County NH (Keene) should see 2-5″ generally, maybe some 6s in a few spots
–Eastern Hampden County, eastern Hampshire County, eastern Franklin County, and eastern Cheshire County should see 4-8″ of snowfall after rain this morning where you should see the heavy snow band northwest of the low center back in and brush you for a while, with snowfall rates of an inch an hour possible for a time
–The above transition zone from light impact to major impact is where isolated power outages will begin to set up
–Worcester County/CMass down into northeast CT is the jackpot from this storm with 8-14″ expected of heavy wet snow, numerous power outages possible, thunderstorm possible, whiteout conditions at times, with 1-2″ per hour snowfall rates this afternoon and evening
