Western Mass Weather for June 30, 2020

[LIKE A HONEY-DRUNK BEAR, OUR UPPER LOW WOBBLES AROUND SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND CONTINUING THE THREAT FOR SCATTERED SHOWERS, DOWNPOURS AND THUNDERSTORMS TODAY AND TOMORROW, WITH SOME SHOWERS POSSIBLE THURSDAY AS WELL… WHILE I’M NOT AUTHORIZED TO DO SO AND DIDN’T DO A FORMAL DAMAGE ASSESSMENT, PRETTY POSITIVE WE HAD A MICROBURST IN WHATELY YESTERDAY… WE WARM AND DRY A BIT FOR 4TH OF JULY… SIGNS OF HEAT BUILDING NEXT WEEK WITH MORE MUGGY CONDITIONS AND STORM POTENTIAL… SUPER DRY PATTERN HAS BROKEN… 7:40AM TUES]

Good morning everybody, again, thanks for all of your reports yesterday, including photos and videos. Robert Macedo of the National Weather Service in Norton, MA (Boston Office, a/k/a “BOX”) may produce a photo gallery from your photos, with credit to each of you of course, and if he does, I’ll post the link on this page.

MICROBURST IN WHATELY
I drove up there myself yesterday, and witnessed numerous healthy trees pulled down, a couple onto houses, as well several fields with uniform crops that were blown in a straight line, all down in the same direction, which would indicate that we saw a microburst given the barn being flattened and other damage as well. This was in the neighborhood between Long Plain Road and River Road, south of Christian Lane, and into parts of northern Hatfield.

TODAY’S WEATHER SUMMARY
–For today, our upper low is near Portland Maine and will be retrograding westward with time
–After light overnight showers, our low will cause scattered showers, downpours and thunderstorms to re-fire by this afternoon and this time track more northeast to southwest, vs. the straight north to south track of yesterday
–Clouds, patchy fog, mist, and a few showers should rule this morning, and then we watch to see the potential for our cloud deck to rise higher and break up somewhat
–This surface heating would allow more showers and storms to bubble up this afternoon, and we can’t rule out more strong to possibly severe storms today
–Highs will only be in the low 70s with dewpoints in the 60s
–Scattered showers are possible tonight with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s
–For Wednesday, our upper low retrogrades even further west, and with a cold pool of air above, more showers and storms are expected in spots
–Highs will again be in the 70s with lows in the upper 50s to low 60s
–By Thursday, warmer temps are expected along with more sunshine.
–Highs should reach the low to mid 80s with a few scattered showers or an isolated thunderstorm possible in the afternoon
–Lows Thursday night will be in the mid 60s with drying conditions
–For Friday, highs will reach the upper 70s to low 80s with a disturbance moving through during the afternoon that should trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms lasting into the evening, with lows in the low 60s
–I don’t see much of a break in the humidity through Friday with dewpoints well into the 60s much of the time, though by the 4th of July on Saturday, it looks nicer
–We should enjoy at least partial sunshine with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, with lower humidity and a few showers possible in the afternoon. Lows will dip to near 60 at night
–Sunday is the pick of the weekend with highs in the low to mid 80s and mostly sunny skies
–Next week we should be warming with time, along with muggier conditions, and a renewed chance for scattered afternoon showers, downpours and thunderstorms

It looks like our super dry June pattern has switched up for the time being, and that is a good thing.

While this type of convective (i.e. thundery and downpouring) weather produces isolated to scattered wet weather vs. stratiform rainstorms that lay even, steady rains across broad swaths of a region, at least it’s better than what we’ve just gone through, so hopefully a greening will continue and our farms and gardens will get the assistance they need to keep pulling in the harvests from week to week.

Have a great day, and stay tuned for updates later…
