TONIGHT AND MONDAY
As of this writing, a finger ribbon of snow running along and north of I-90 out in eastern and central NY is pointing its snowy tip at southern VT, the northern Taconics, the northern Berkshires and generally north of the Rt. 2 corridor. In these areas, 1-3″ of snow is expected overnight and into tomorrow morning. For the rest of us, we should see some flurries or snow showers, and maybe some coatings as well. Lows tonight will drop into the upper 20s to low 30s.

For Monday morning, periods of light snow mixed with rain (or just plain rain) will fall before dissipating by the afternoon. The morning commute could be a bit slick for high terrain commuters, and even down into the valley along and north of Rt. 9. Snow should mix with and change to rain showers south of the Pike, but some flakes are possible there, too.

TUESDAY PLOWABLE SNOWFALL
For Tuesday, confidence is growing that we will see another low pressure system form off the Mid-Atlantic coastline and track south of Long Island, pushing precip into our neck of the woods. With lows in the mid to upper 20s, and colder air just to our northwest, this bears watching.

I have attached temperature maps at a mile up, half a mile up, and dewpoint temps at the surface. As you can see, we’re expected to generally be below freezing above our heads, yet any snow will be falling into relatively saturated air. This makes me think that with temps close to freezing, this will be a wet snow (except for maybe northern Berkshires and SVT), but should be mainly in the form of snow, especially north of the Pike. Excellent convergence seems possible which would produce plenty of lift, resulting in moderate to heavy snow an dynamic cooling of the column of air above our heads (a/k/a “the column”).

Preliminary information would indicate that at least 2-4″ of snow could fall, but given recent trends, I could see this system dumping half a foot in some places. A precip type map is also attached for reference. I will post more on this developing storm situation tomorrow morning, with another early evening report posted as well tomorrow to keep you updated.

Any snow should come to an end by around sunset, with partly to mostly cloudy skies at night and lows in the low 20s.

WEDNESDAY/THANKSGIVING BRUTAL COLD
And if that wasn’t enough good news for you… wait, there’s more!! Act now, and you too can be the proud owner of a travel-disrupting snow squall Wednesday night followed by below-zero wind chills and the coldest day of the season – on Thanksgiving Day! Order while supplies last.

In all seriousness, the level of cold that is arriving for the third week in November cannot be understated. It is serious, and for those who are infirm, elderly, and otherwise more prone to health issues exacerbated by cold, this serves as your notice to prepare.

On Wednesday, a strong cold front will be approaching the region. Highs will be near the freezing mark. It will be a mostly sunny day, but the powerful cold will be on the way.

Some snow showers and snow squalls are possible as the front moves through early Wednesday evening, along with lake effect snow showers that may survive the trip all the way through the length of NY state.

Behind the front, winds are going to gust to 40mph or so, as you can see in the attached map. In the following map, you can see this will drop wind chills into the single to possibly double digits below zero Wednesday night into Thursday morning – just brutal for ANY day of Winter, let alone late November. Highs on Thanksgiving Day may not even reach the 20 degree mark, so plan accordingly folks, is all I am saying. Lows Thanksgiving night will be in the single digits as winds slacken a bit.

Friday and Saturday look to be fair with moderating temperatures after our Arctic blast swings east and away from us.

More storminess is possible Sunday into early next week. We’re in an active and wintry pattern.

I want to send a big THANK YOU to all the folks who bought my 2019 calendar featuring beautiful photos by Julian Parker-Burns this year, as well as those buying them tonight. Just click the link below to order, and thank you very much!

Good morning everybody, while a few sunny breaks are expected today, any such streaks of golden sunlight should reach our surface during the morning, with clouds dominating today, and building during the second half of the day.

With a cold front having passed to our south, it’ll be some 10 degrees colder than yesterday with highs in the low to mid 30s.

Snow showers will likely break out during either side of sunset (3-6pm), as a weak disturbance will rise along the frontal boundary draped off the south coast of New England.

For tonight, it will continue to snow, generally lightly, but it will accumulate and cause some roadways to become slick. Lows will dip into the mid 20s to low 30s.

Snow will continue during the morning commute, and could slow folks down a bit. It’s a light event, but its timing is not so hot. Rain is possible from Springfield points east and south.

After this disturbance passes, additional rain or snow showers are possible for Tuesday as another wave of energy tries to coalesce something over us.

Wednesday is looking brutally cold with strong west winds, snow showers snd squalls over the Taconics, and Berkshires that would dry up before reaching the valley. Highs will be in the range in the upper 20s to mid 30s

Brutal cold arrives Wednesday night into Thanksgiving Day with gusty northwesterly winds, lows in the teens and highs only in the 20s! At least Wed. and Thurs. will feature plenty of sunshine.

Have a great day, and please remember that
