Western Mass Weather for November 29, 2019

[LONG DURATION PLOWABLE SNOW CURRENTLY EXPECTED FOR SOME IN THE WMASS REGION] FAIR TODAY AND TOMORROW, FOLLOWED BY SNOW’S ARRIVAL EARLY AFTERNOON ON SUNDAY… QUESTION OF WHERE A SNOW/MIX LINE SETS UP SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE MA/CT STATE LINE AND ROUTE 9 CORRIDOR IN WMASS… OVER 6″ EXPECTED IN AREAS THAT REMAIN ALL SNOW… 36 HOURS OF PRECIP POSSIBLE FROM SUNDAY EARLY AFTERNOON TO THE PRE-DAWN HOURS OF TUESDAY MORNING (7:55am Friday)

Good morning everybody! I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving Day, I certainly did, and am now setting my sights on what looks like it will become our first widespread winter storm with snow and ice across the region, with some rain mixing into northeast CT eastern Hampden and southern Worcester Counties.

If I were you, this is as good a time as any to get the snow shovels ready, plant the snow stakes along the drive way, get your salt/sanding materials ready, snow kits in the cars, etc.

SUMMARY
–For today, high pressure builds in from the northwest and while some clouds are possible in high terrain areas west of the CT River later on, we should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid to upper 30s
–Winds will gust out of the north to 20-30mph early, then slacken
–Tonight, lows will drop into mid to upper teens as high pressure crests overhead, very cold!
–Saturday will be a mostly sunny repeat of today, but a touch colder with highs in the low to mid 30s and lows in the low to mid teens
–It is this antecedent cold air mass that will provide for a solid area of cold surface air for precip approaching my early afternoon to run into, rise, and produce light, to (at times) moderate snowfall Sunday afternoon
–This will last into the early evening as the original/parent low pressure system pushes through the Ohio Valley towards PA
–Then, on Sunday night, secondary low pressure development will be induced off the New Jersey coastline, and the storm is expected track toward or south of Nantucket Island
–It is the exact location of the spawning of this secondary low and its resultant track that will have big implications on where the snow/ice line sets up over southern New England, and specifically the WMass region
–For now, it appears that enough of a north jog and trend is showing up that the best chance for areas seeing all snow would be north of the Rt. 9 corridor in the WMass and CMass region, including the Berkshires, Taconics, Berkshires, SWNH, and northern Worcester County
–This storm will encounter block high pressure to it east, which will slow it down, and cause precip to oast through Monday and into Monday night, so 30-36 hours of precip is possible
–A preliminary snowfall estimate would be 6-12″ north of the Rt. 9 corridor and 3-6″ south of there with a mix of ice and rain but this will likely change and need refinement, so stay tuned!
–Precip exits by Tuesday, and then we see a return of fair and seasonably cold weather conditions

So stay tuned folks, this could be a moderate to major snowstorm for some of us, and I will be all over it and keeping you updated all the way.

Check back this page a few times a day, and have a great day!
