LITCHFIELD COUNTY… SLIPPERY TRAVEL EXPECTED IN THOSE CURRENTLY ADVISED AREAS, AS WELL AS PORTIONS OF THE HILLTOWNS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE CT RIVER AND N. WORCESTER COUNTY FOR PERIODS OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN, WITH SNOW RELEGATED TO THE NORTHERN BERKSHIRES, TACONICS, SVT, AND PORTIONS OF SWNH… WHAT ARE YOU SEEING THIS MORNING? 2019 HOLIDAY OFFICIAL MERCH SALE IS LIVE (INFO LINKS AT BOTTOM)… 7:30AM SUNDAY 11/24/19…
Good morning everybody, looks like the snow overperformed a bit in some central/northern valley areas. While I expected some coatings, as you can see in Greenfield from this photo by Jesse Clark at about 3am, 1-2″ of snow accumulated there, and slushy coatings were seen in Florence, which is now raining.
What did you see and are you seeing in your neck of the woods? Write your town, current conditions, and any accumulation amounts below so we can pain the picture of the entire WMass region! Thank you!
For this morning, a mix of sleet, freezing rain and snow is being seen in SVT, SWNH, the northern Litchfields, Berkshires, portions of Franklin County and the western hilltowns, with a transition to steady rain over central/eastern Hampshire and Hampden counties down into the rest of northern CT.
Temps in SVT and SWNH are in the 28-32 range, so I am most concerned for slippery travel up that way with periods of snow and ice lasting through the morning before changing to rain by afternoon. In setups like these, some of the highest elevations may see mostly wintry precip from this system, but hopefully we’ll get a change to rain up that way, too.
For the rest of the WMass region, temps are in the low to mid 30s with either sleet and freezing rain being seen as warmer air works in aloft, or just plain rain in much of the central and lower valley. A raw day is on tap, to be sure!
However, pockets of snow may hang on for a bit this morning in the northern Berkshires, or WMass border towns with SVT especially, and possibly even in northeastern Franklin County and northwest Worcester County before transitioning to ice and rain.
2-4″ looks like a good bet in SVT and SWNH, and a coating to 3″ elsewhere, with little to nothing from Holyoke south and east.
Up to tenth of an inch or so of ice glaze in the high terrain is expected on top of any light snow accumulations.
And if that weren’t enough, after our mainly rainy/icy period for the bulk of today, we should transition back to snow in the high terrain before it ends, and it could really burst with heavy snow for a time for an additional coating to maybe an inch before quitting tonight in those high passes.
This change-back-over (horrible phrase, I know, no coffee yet) will most likely occur between 3-6pm from west to east (Taconics and SW.VT first in highest passes).
I don’t believe we will all see change from rain to snow in the valley, and if we did, it should be brief or just mixed rain and snow before ending between 6-8pm.
Ok, that does it for now, I have commitments this morning that will take me off line, but I will be back by early afternoon, I expect, with a quick update.
Be careful traveling out there today, and take main highways if you can if traveling through mountain areas, as they are the best treated, mildest in temperature, most frequently traveled, etc. (meaning I-87, I-90, I-91, I-84, I-93).
