Please post any damage reports from your ‘hood below, and pics if you have them.

I hope you fared well last night, though I some folks did not, with trees on houses, power outages, and the like.

WINDY TODAY
The winds have veered around to the west, and our blowing gusts about 20-40mph at times so far this morning.

This should increase to about 30-50mph for most today, as drier, colder air advects into the region behind our super sharp cold front from last night, which is now offshore.

Temps dropped 30+ degrees from the low 70s into the upper 30s to 40s in like 6 hours! HUGE air mass shift.

Temps may come up into the upper 40s to low 50s for some with the sunshine today, but after that slight rise, they will begin to plummet again during the afternoon.

Winds die down after sunset, and should be calm after midnight. This will maximize radiational cooling, and with a super dry air mass in place, temps will fall into the mid to upper 20s by dawn – an over 40 degrees drop in 30 hours!

Saturday through Monday look gorgeous and cool. Highs will only reach the 45-50 degree range with mostly sunny skies and lows in the upper 20s to low 30s across the region.

The lake effect snow machine should kick on for the first time this year by Sunday (well, actually, it’s showing out over the western Adirondacks now!).

This may drop a few flurries or light show showers into the southern Green Mountains of southern VT Sunday, so it will be partly sunny up that way on Sunday, mostly sunny for most of the rest of us.

By Tuesday, high pressure that brought this 4-day, much-needed sunny stretch passes east of us, creating a rather anemic return southwesterly flow for one more quasi-temperature rise into Wednesday.

This will allow temperatures to rise into the mid to upper 50s, with some showers possible Tuesday into Wednesday as a weak disturbance moves through.

Beyond that?

The coldest air of the new season is coming, my friends. Highs in the 40s at best, lows in the 20s, with some highs only in the 30s up in SVT, Berkshires and hilltowns.

If a disturbance times with this, some of us could see our first snowflakes of the season by the end of next weekend.

The attached graphic shows greens and lavendars parked over our heads by next weekend. This refers to very strong trough in the mid levels, which just means that average pressure levels about 3-4 miles up will closer to the surface of the Earth than average – that translates to colder temperatures, and possibility for storminess.

Troughs always indicate potential for storm development, that’s the key takeaway, peeps.

I’m not saying winter is locking in just yet. Some of the closest analogs to our current ocean pattern is the 2014-2015 winter, which was a very strong one, but featured some warming in December into January before hitting the deep freeze and snow machine late January through March, bringing Boston its highest snow totals ever in recorded history.

Much remains to be seen, but the cold is coming.

Have a great day!
