(6:15pm Friday) STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORM UPDATE FOR FRIDAY EVENING…
Good evening everybody, while we’ve been dealing with showers and a thunderstorm or two this afternoon, there is a strong squall line that has formed out over west-central NY and is absolutely ripping to the east at 75mph (those aren’t wind speeds on the ground, but the speed of the squall line itself, aloft).
Given it’s southwest-to-northeast orientation, this puts the onset of showers and storms from this line into southern Vermont and the northern Berkshires by about 8:00-8:30pm, and the southern Berkshires and northwest CT by about 8:30-9:00pm. Then the line will proceed east through the region, and will begin to weaken over our area. Where exactly the weakening begins cannot be pinpointed.
Conditions are best to produce severe thunderstorms in a line that begins just north of Albany on up to Rutland, VT and points north.
That doesn’t preclude us from getting some strong weather in here after sunset with gusty winds, hail, torrential rain, and lightning. A possible weak tornado is still possible, but that’s mainly well north of the Rt. 2 corridor the way it looks now.
As they say, when thunder roars go indoors. Any storms would be moving in from the west, so be weather aware tonight, and stay safe.
After this line passes through, winds will gust over 40mph after midnight as much drier, and cooler air rushes in behind this frontal passage.
We’ve got a much more pleasant day tomorrow with highs in the low 70s, mostly sunny skiers, and much drier humidity. Then we’ll see some even cooler temps on Sunday with highs in the 60s and showers thanks to a coastal low moving through New England.
Have a great night!

(10:20am Fri) INCREASED THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS NORTH OF THE RT. 2 CORRIDOR IN E.NY, N.BERKSHIRES, FRANKLIN CTY AND S.VT/NH…
Good morning everybody, given that winds will be turning with height from surface to sky (a/k/a “directional wind shear”), there is an increased risk for some scattered severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail, and even an isolated tornado (best chance of a tornado would in south-central VT).
Please keep an awareness to the western sky today…

(6:45AM Fri) ALTERNATING PERIODS OF SHOWERS AND DRY LULLS TODAY BEFORE SCATTERED STRONG THUNDERSTORMS BECOME POSSIBLE LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND THROUGH THE EARLY EVENING AHEAD OF TONIGHT’S COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE… WIND ADVISORY POSTED FOR EARLY SATURDAY MORNING AS WINDS GUST TO 50MPH OVERNIGHT… SUNNY SATURDAY, SHOWERY SUNDAY, COOLER OVERALL..SPRING RETURNS…
Good morning everybody, we’re starting off warm again with many folks in the 60s in the already as we spend one more day in the warm sector of a low passing well to our northwest. I will bullet out the rest of the salient points:
–There will likely be more cloudiness than sunshine today, which will help attenuate the severe storm potential
–For today, we will see some morning showers, more showers possible in the middle of the day, and then showers and thunderstorms this evening
–There will be some dry periods, as well as some sunny periods, but we should see more clouds than sun today
–Highs will reach the middle 70s in the Berkshires and up to the low 80s in the valley with occasional westerlies gusting to 25mph at times
–For early this evening, the best shot for strong thunderstorms with gusty winds and small hail will be in Berkshire County and southern VT, with decreasing chances to the east
–After any showers and thunderstorm activity clears our region to the east, strong westerly winds will be moving in right behind the cold front overnight
–Expect winds to gust over 40mph a times during the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning, and into the early morning post-dawn hours. Lows tonight will be in the upper 40s
–The weekend is mixed. Saturday is definitely the pick of the weekend with drier air, continued breezy conditions, and sunshine with highs in the low to mid 70s and lows in the 40s
–Sunday looks mostly cloudy with showers at times thanks to a coastal low that will move in from the southwest. Highs should be cooler and in the low to mid 60s
–The first half of next week looks pleasant with fair weather and seasonable Spring highs in the 60s
Have a great day!
