Western Mass Weather for May 30, 2021

SUMMER HEAT AND HUMIDITY MOVES BACK INTO THE REGION BY MID TO LATE NEXT WEEK, BUT NOT BEFORE THE LAST 2 DAYS OF METEOROLOGICAL SPRING BRING ONE LAST SOAKING RAINFALL TO THE WMASS REGION STARTING BETWEEN 8-11AM THIS MORNING FROM SOUTH TO NORTH AND LASTING ALL DAY, AND INTO THE NIGHT, ALL DAY, AND INTO THE NIGHT #KINKSREFERENCE, WITH SOME SOME THUNDER POSSIBLE EAST OF I-91 OVERNIGHT… MEMORIAL DAY STARTS OFF WITH SOME INSTABILITY SHOWERS WITH IMPROVING CONDITIONS IN THE AFTERNOON… THEN THE WARMENING AND ASSOCIATED MUGGIFICATION ACTIVITIES BEGINS AND LASTS FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE… 6:45AM SUNDAY…

Good morning everybody, I hope your dreams weren’t too weird, and that you slept well enough if not soundly. Gray skies are not usually indicative of an impending get-up-and-go attitude, especially on a Sunday no less, but if you’re reading this, we’re still embodied on this cosmic spaceship hurtling through the Sea of Space, so let’s shake it off, get a hot beverage, and get to it.

Here, I’ll start.

For today, our rainstorm is gathering force well to our south down the eastern seaboard as its upper low companion digs southeast, currently positioned near the borders of PA, OH, and WV.

This upper low will “go negative” meaning its orientation as a spinning ball of air (a/k/a “vorticity”) will continue to be more aligned from northwest to southeast, and with counterclockwise flow around it, will act as a guide to direct our surface coastal low north-northeastward up the eastern seaboard and into New England – Strike!

As for current/recent conditions, our temps are in the 40s with a few upper 30s scattered about, and we actually ranged between a half inch of rain to 2.5″ of rain in parts of northeast CT!

And what can we expect for high temps? Well, we can expect high temps to be about where they are right now, may be mid to upper 40s at best. If someone crests 50º, that’ll be a feat for today.

Rainfall is already pushing back into southern CT and southeast NY, and should arrive into northern CT sometime around 8am or so, and then continue to track north and east into the rest of the WMass region and points north.

Rainfall will present in a more showery fashion today, at times raining heavily with some downpours possible, as this storm taps into a giant moisture mass and hurls it northward to rain out over our region.

At other times, there may be light showers, or a lull. Northeast winds will gust between 20-30mph at times.

As we move into tonight, the chance for heavier rain increases, along with potential for a thunderstorm to swing through as our storm approaches eastern Long Island, destined to track over EMass and hug the Maine coastline.

So, showers continue overnight with lows in the low to mid 40s with heavy rain at times. We should end up with another 1-2″ by tomorrow, maybe a bit more in some spots, with some long-weekend totals reaching close to 5″.

As we move into Memorial Day Monday, showers should start to wane as a dry slot punches into the region as the low center lifts north of our longitude to our east.

We will still have to watch as the upper low moves through on Monday, as this will likely cause some isolated to scattered instability showers to float through at times.

However, the afternoon at the moment looks like we should also see some partial sunshine develop due to northwesterly flow, and highs reaching the mid 50s to mid 60s – The Mildening!

Lows will be in the mid to upper 40s tomorrow night (which is the same as today’s highs!).

Tuesday and Wednesday and is a different story as warm air begins to surge back into the region as our nascent Bermuda High starts to set up shop, doing its reps faithfully, working its way back up to big ridge status, and eventually pumping heat and humidity into New England by late week into next weekend when we’ll surge back through the 80s and close to 90º.

A frontal boundary may bring some showers and thunderstorms by Thursday, but after that, The Summering commences.

I wish I had better news for the folks who were relying on this weekend’s weather to cooperate with their long weekend break from work. All we can hope for now is a decent end to Memorial Day, because today is a lost cause unless you gear up, grill and hang under an overhang of sorts, and don your rain outfits.
