Western Mass Weather for May 3, 2020

[SPRINGTIME WARMTH ARRIVES… IF THE SUNSHINE REALLY DEVELOPS, WE’RE WELL INTO THE 70S, MAYBE NEAR 80 IN NORTHERN CT BRIEFLY! IT LAST FOR ONE DAY… A FEW SHOWERS TOMORROW AFTERNOON, STILL MILD… THEN 50S REST OF THE WEEK, DRY THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING, A FEW SHOWER CHANCES THEREAFTER… WATCHING A STORM THAT MAY BRING RAIN AND HIGH ELEVATION SNOW SHOWERS FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY, WITH STRONG WIND POSSIBLE NEXT WEEKEND… 8:20AM SUNDAY]

Good morning folks, we’re starting off quite mild this morning, with temps in the 50s and our overnight showers cleared to the east.

Expect a partly sunny day on average with west winds gusting to 20mph at times.

The key is how much sunshine do we see? The more we get, the higher the temps will go. We’re at least getting into the upper 60s to mid 70s, but we could reach the upper 70s in a few spots along and south of the MassPike if we can keep the clouds at bay.

Another gorgeous day, either way!

For tonight, a cold front crosses the region, and brings in more clouds, with an isolated shower possible. Lows will drop into the mid to upper 40s.

For Monday, temps will be noticeably cooler, only rising into the mid 50s to low 60s behind the cold front, along with fresh northwest winds gusting 20-30mph at times. A few showers are possible in the afternoon as a colder pool of air aloft spins in overhead, but shouldn’t be that big a deal.

Lows tomorrow night will be colder, possibly dropping below freezing in the high terrain, and into the mid to upper 30s in the valleys under partly cloudy skies.

Tuesday and Wednesday should feature high pressure and dry conditions, with mostly sunny skies on Tuesday and more partial sunshine on Wednesday.

Highs will be in the 50s both days, with low to mid 50s Tuesday and mid to upper 50s Wednesday, and lows in the 30s for both nights.

By Thursday into Saturday we’re looking at more unsettled weather. Thursday into Friday may see showers from a frontal passage, but it’s Friday into Saturday that I’m really keeping my eye on.

A stronger storm is likely going to interact with an upper level trough that will be descending south out of eastern Canada.

If these two interact just right, we could see a widespread rainstorm in our region Friday into Saturday, and we cannot rule out high elevation wet snowfall, as long in the tooth as we are for winter weather around here.

We’re reaching the late-season outlier time, as we had a huge snowstorm May 9-10, 1977, during which I was in EMass as a kid, and we got 10″ of wet snow with full leaf-out that tore down a big maple in our front yard, and created tree carnage across the entire town I grew up in!

I do NOT expect anything like that, but the Berkshires, western hills, southern VT areas could see some wet snow, and possibly (which I certainly hope and expect would be) the final lake effect snow event of this late season on Saturday behind the storm, with strong northwest winds possible across our entire region.

So for now, we’ve got pleasant weather, folks, through Wednesday AT LEAST, so enjoy what’s immediately ahead.

My job is to keep the weather periscope up for you all, so I will continue to monitor the late-week/early-weekend storm potential and keep you updated. I have been talking about that May 9-10 period for several days now, and it’s still in play. We shall see.

Get out and enjoy some nature today if you can!
