Western Mass Weather for May 13, 2019

MORE SNOW IS EXPECTED TONIGHT AND THROUGH THE PRE-DAWN HOURS OF TUESDAY MORNING FOR AREAS ABOVE 1000 FEET IN WMASS, SVT, SWNH, THE TACONICS, AND THE WORCESTER HILLS… ANOTHER CLOUDY, UNSEASONABLY COLD DAY IS ON TAP WITH RAIN MOVING IN BETWEEN 4-7PM, MIXING WITH AND/OR CHANGING TO SNOW BEFORE MIDNIGHT MAINLY NORTH OF THE RT. 9 CORRIDOR… ANOTHER COOL AND SHOWERY DAY TOMORROW, AFTER WHICH WE SHOULD START THE NEXT PHASE OF THE MILDENING… HIGHS IN THE LOW 70s BY NEXT WEEK? POSSIBLE… MAY THE HOPE BE WITH YOU… (7:05am Monday)

Good morning everybody, yesterday’s surprise flip to snow in the high terrain was a rude reminder that it can and does snow in southern New England from time to time into the middle of May. It’s pretty rare, but it does happen, and it is going to happen again tonight and into very early tomorrow morning. Yippee!!!?

I am going to bullet out the details for the rest of this report:

SUMMARY
–We’re starting off cold with lots of upper 30s and low 40s across the region
–We will be mostly cloudy for all of day, maybe a peek or two of sun through thinning clouds, otherwise we’re overcast, but pretty dry with an isolated shower possible
–Highs will reach the upper 40s with lows dropping to the mid to upper 30s
–A mid-level low pressure system will be tracking through the eastern Great Lakes today and tonight
–At the same time, a secondary surface low pressure system will develop along the southern New Jersey coastline and track northeast towards Cape Cod
–This will push rainfall back into the region between 4-7pm today, and by tomorrow noon another half inch to an inch of rainfall will have landed
–In addition, rain will mix with and/or change to wet snow across SVT, SWNH, the northern Berkshires/Taconics, and the western hilltowns, especially in Franklin County
–A coating to as much as 3″ of snowfall is possible in these areas, and we can’t rule out another half a foot for Mt. Snow, Stratton and Bromley (maybe more?)
–Patchy fog is also expected tonight in spots
–For Tuesday, the upper level low has to slowly work through the region, and with a cold pool of air aloft, showers are expected for much of the day with highs in the 40 and lows in the upper 30s
–By mid-week, we should get a little break of high pressure with a partly sunny day and highs in the upper 50s as milder air works back into the region
–A few more showers are possible Thursday, but the Friday through Sunday period looks more partly sunny with increasing temps, and highs up to 70 degrees possible by end of the weekend, and extending into next week! Woot!!

There’s some light at the end of this rainy and snowy tunnel, hang in there, because that’s what humans do. We don’t give up. We hang in there.

Have a great day!
