Western Mass Weather for May 12, 2021 (updated 7:30pm)

REMINDER: FROST ADVISORIES TONIGHT FOR S.VT AND THE NORTHERN BERKSHIRES… RIDGE-A-SAURUS REX GETS CLOSER AND COZIER WITH NEW ENGLAND, BUT IT’S STILL GOING TO REMAIN JUST WEST OF US, AND NOT SOUTH OF US, WHICH KEEPS THE BIG WARMENINGS AT BAY, THOUGH TEMPS RISE INTO THE MORE SEASONABLE 60S AND, AT TIMES, 70S… BY THE WAY, WHAT THE HAIL WAS THAT EARLIER? 7:30pm Wed…

Good evening folks, just a quick evening post to get us updated.

That brief little hail shower in Hampshire and Hampden Counties was unexpected, but it grew tall enough to tap into the very cold air at -10º Celsius about 2 miles up, and we got some hail pellets.

The rest of us saw some other showers, but most of the sky was filled with sunshine and pretty cumulus clouds.

For tonight, it looks like the wind gusts to 20mph last a bit longer, but should tail off after midnight, and with mostly clear skies after our final showers die out with the stabilization between temps at the surface and aloft (meaning they come closer together, rather than representing a wide difference from warm to cold, which encourages air to rise).

Lows tonight will drop into the low to mid 30s across southern VT, southwest NH, the northern Berkshires, and generally along and north of Rt. 2 above 1000 feet elevation, with mid to upper 30s elsewhere.

Frost can form at 35 or 36º, as the surface can be colder than where your thermometer is stationed, but I believe this will be the last frost before next Autumn… here’s hoping that’s true.

Tomorrow looks lovely with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 65-70º range with lows in the 40s, then we’re off to the upper 60s to mid 70s Friday through Sunday with a spot shower possible each afternoon, with generally partly to mostly sunny skies otherwise – a nice, MELLOW summery pattern, with seasonable temps.

Have a great evening, folks…

ALERT: FROST ADVISORIES ARE POSTED FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN VT, NORTHERN BERKSHIRE COUNTY, AND THE NORTHERN TACONICS FOR LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY THURSDAY MORNING… SUMMAH-TIME PATTERN (NOT TEMPS) SETS UP FRIDAY INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK, WITH PARTLY SUNNY SKIES AND POP-UP AFTERNOON SCATTERED SHOWERS OR EVEN A THUNDAH-SHOWAH POSSIBLE… IN OTHER WORDS, NO BIG WHOOP WEATHER ON THE WAY, WITH MILDER TEMPS, WITH TODAY BEING THE LAST DAY FOR 50S HIGHS FOR A WHILE… 6:50AM WED…

Good morning, denizens of The Golden West, residents of southwestern New England, hardy folks up in the WINDy HAMlets of southern VT, dwellers in the hills and dales of N.CT, and the those in the magical woodland realms of southwest NH and CMass, rise and shine, raise thy brows, and greet the day with hope!

Or, get up, scratch your hairy back, swish some mouthwash, and grumble-stumble down and flick the coffee pot on, whatever floats your boat!

As we already know, TBM (The Bulletization Mobile) is still parked on the roof like a Harry Potter movie, so list away the salient points of our upcoming weather, I shall!

SUMMARY
–Cool this morning, but well above freezing thanks to our breezy overnight period
–Breezes still continue today, but will weaken with time, maybe some gusts up to 20mph or so, then less as we head through the afternoon
–Some clouds in northwest MA and SVT this morning (hey, it flurried in SVT last night!) will dissipate with time, while the rest of us our clear and soon to be sunny
–Highs will reach the mid 50s to mid 60s from the high terrain of SVT down into the southern Pioneer Valley of WMass and N.CT
–We will see mostly sunny skies earlier on, but some cumulus will dot the skies later, turning it more partly sunny late with a few scattered showers possible
–We may even get a thunder shower out of the deal. While we’re here, I think I may bring back the term thunder shower vs. thunderstorm for more run of the mill type storms, to help distinguish from stronger to severe storms… to be continued/determined…
–For tonight, any showers dissipate as our upper cool trough finally vamooses to the east and lifts out of New England… BuhBye Trough!
–This means skies clear, winds calm, and temps drop, and it will be quite cold for mid May!
–Frost Advisories are up because lows are anticipated to drop into the low to mid 30s in SVT, the northern Berkshires/Taconics, and possibly western Franklin/Hampshire Counties in those hilltowns as well, so plan accordingly
–After we rise into the 40s Thursday morning, I think we’re in the clear, I think that is likely the last frost. I can’t say 100%, but I’m telling everybody I know personally they can begin planting, so if I’m wrong, they can throw dead vegetables at me
–Thursday is GORGEOUS, highs mid 60s to low 70s, mostly sunny skies, high pressure, lighter wind, and lows will drop into the low to mid 40s
–Then the Friday into early next week period falls into a pattern not unlike the past two days, but milder
–This means that a broad westerly and northwesterly flow with cooler air aloft, and increasingly warmer air at the surface will combine each afternoon to produce a few scattered pop-up showers or even a thunder shower after a mostly sunny day with highs in the upper 60s to low/mid 70s
–I just learned today that this is sometimes termed as a “persistence forecast” which makes sense
–This is probably not unlike places like Florida or southern California that fall into repeating daily patterns of weather
–There may be some more showery weather possible early next week, but as of now, I believe we will see this type of partly to mostly sunny, warm day followed by some building clouds and a few showers to end the day continue into early next week

I will keep you updated, but for now, mind those plants overnight, and then have at it, plant people!!

Have a great day!
