Western Mass Weather for May 1, 2020

[STEADY RAIN IS ENDING THIS MORNING… SCATTERED SHOWERS AND POSSIBLY A THUNDERSTORM EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON INTO EARLY EVENING… SATURDAY TURNS INTO THE WARMER WEEKEND’S PICK, BUT SUNDAY AIN’T TOO SHABBY EITHER WITH A MORNING SHOWER OR TWO POSSIBLE… A FEW SHOWERS ON MONDAY WITH MILD TEMPS, THEN WE COOL INTO MID WEEK… 7:10AM FRIDAY]

Good morning everybody, the rain woke me up overnight, but I do enjoy the sound of those atmospheric night moves. #ChildOfThe70s

Our rain river is east of the Berkshires and Litchfields mostly, and will continue to slide east out of WMass, NW CT and SVT through mid morning and then out of CMass, SWNH and NE CT through mid to late morning.

An upper level disturbance will float a cold pool of air overhead this afternoon, and this combined with a few breaks of sunshine and highs spiking above 60 at times (though mostly in the 55-60 range) will help produce showers and a couple of thunderstorms, so the wet weather doesn’t end with this morning’s steady rain departure.

Don’t be surprised if some of the afternoon’s downpours or t-storms drop some small hail, either.

Any showers and storms dissipate tonight, and lows will drop into the low to mid 40s with partly cloudy skies developing as high pressure nudges in from the west.

Saturday looks glorious! Mostly sunny skies, some fair weather cumulus, a fresh northwest breeze gusting to 20mph or so at times… I foresee some nice sky photos. Highs will reach the mid 60s to low 70s. Enjoy!

Lows on Saturday night will dip into the mid to upper 40s, and clouds will increase ahead of a frontal boundary that will pass through for Sunday morning.

Sunday will start off mostly cloudy with a few breaks in the cloud deck, and a few scattered showers, but they look light and they don’t last all day.

We should end up with a partly sunny day (more sun in the second half of the day than the first), and highs in the upper 60s to low 70s with a west wind gusting to 20mph or at times. Lows will drop into the mid to upper 40s.

Monday and Tuesday look like fair weather for now with plenty of sunshine and highs in the upper 50s to low 60s on Monday, but we have to watch a system that may bring a few showers on Monday, with highs in the 50s on Tuesday (and through much of the coming week). Lows will be in the 35-40 degree range during this period.

Next week isn’t looking too bad at all, just cooler, with no real rain storms in sight.

The only stormy period on my radar now is that May 8-10 period, which may produce one more wintry-type storm that could whiten the high peaks of southern VT, northwest MA and southwest NH once more, but for now, we are looking WAY better than the month of April.

Let’s hope that trend continues in ALL of the aspects of our lives after what was a horrendous April of 2020. Good riddance. Happy May Day!!

Enjoy the weekend, folks, and pack the umbrella if you must go out today…
