Western Mass Weather for March 2, 2021 (updated 6pm)

[WIND CALMS DOWN TONIGHT… COLD… MILDER TOMORROW, BACK TO COOLER LATE WEEK INTO THE WEEKEND, WARMER NEXT WEEK, PEACE IN THE VALLEY… 5:50PM TUES]

Good evening folks, just a quick double-dashed update for this evening.

SUMMARY
–Current wind gusts have been in the 20-30mph range in the high terrain, and maybe up to 15mph in the valley locations
–With loss of daytime “heating” and the pressure gradient relaxing, so too will the winds finally calm late, but they will kick up the first half of tonight at times
–Lows tonight will dip into the mid to upper teens under partly cloudy skies
–For Wednesday, partly sunny skies are expected with a westerly flow as our high passes under it and backs the wind from northwest to west, which taps a milder source region for temps
–Highs will reach the upper 30s to mid 40s, and lows will drop into the low to mid 20s with perhaps a snow shower in southern VT or the northern Berkshires and northwest hilltowns as a weak system passes well north
–Thursday looks sunny and colder as a weak cold front slips through, highs reach the low to mid 30s with lows in the teens as another shot of colder air filters in under clear skies
–Friday is the coldest of the next stretch, with highs in the mid 20s to low 30s and lows in the teens with blustery conditions that day (but nowhere near last night and today!)
–The weekend looks sweet, sunny, cold, highs in the upper 20s to low 30s Saturday and low to mid 30s Sunday
–Then it’s 40s Monday, upper 40s to low 50s Tuesday, and well into the 50s mid to late next week! Do we hit 60? Maybe!
–Sunshine most of the way, with the next chance of rain the following weekend (see the attached chart)

Good morning everybody, well THAT was a wild night to be sure. I suspect there are going to be stories of tree and property damage, but I hope somehow it’s minimized, that was quite a blow last night.

Wind gusts of 40mph to over 60mph were clocked in the overnight, and that has resulted in 11000 outages in Worcester County, and about 7000 and climbing in the 4 counties of WMass.

Temps are in the singles and low teens, and wind chills were down to 5-15º below zero, maybe lower in the southern Greens, just brutal Arctic stuff for early March (or any time of Winter, actually).

For today, highs will only reach the low to mid 20s for most of us in the WMass region, maybe some upper 20s Springfield/Hartford corridor, and probably in the upper teens in southern VT east into southwest NH.

Northwest winds will continue to gust as high as 45 or 50mph thanks to a strong pressure gradient between a bombing low well northeast of us, and a powerful high pressure ridge in the center of the U.S. tracking east towards the east coast.

Don’t be surprised if winds pick up as the sun gets higher and “warms” us a bit, as that steepens the temperature gradient from surface to a mile up, which can help bring stronger winds up there, down here.

By afternoon, we should see winds a little less intense, gusting 35 to 40mph at times, and then they will throttle back even more tonight down to gusts of 20-30mph.

Wind chills today at its peak will still be in the single digits above zero for many of us, teens Springfield points south, and below zero single digits in the western hills, eastern Berkshires, and SVT. Hello, Winter day!

Lows tonight will be in the teens, but southwest flow will get going for tomorrow, so a mildening is in the cards.

For Wednesday, highs will reach the upper 30s to mid 40s under mostly sunny skies with lows in the low to mid 20s.

A cold front slides through Thursday, but nothing like last night’s!

Still, while fair weather extends throughout the coming weekend with abundant sunshine (yay!), high temps will be in the upper 20s to mid 30s through Saturday (Friday will be the coldest of that stretch), with lows in the teens to low 20s with Sunday seeing milder highs in the mid to upper 30s.

Next week, by say Wednesday, we could see highs ramping up into the 50s with a strong mild Pacific air surge through the region.

We generally can’t ever say goodbye to winter weather in the WMass region until mid-May (especially in the hiltowns, Berkshires, and SVT) but we are really turning a corner in the short-term to a much milder, Spring-like pattern.

To the folks who detest Winter weather, as Led Zeppelin once sang about 50 years ago, You’re Time is Gonna Come!
