Good evening folks, the change in air mass has surely made its presence known this afternoon and evening, wow!

We’ve got mainly fair weather from Wednesday through the weekend, with mild temps in the 40s on Wednesday and colder temps in the 30s for highs Thursday through Sunday (that’s the broad brush look at this point, I will refine starting tomorrow morning).

Given that we have a dynamic 24 hours of winter weather ahead, I am going to focus on that for this report.

And just a reminder – we’re still hurtling through the Cosmos at 515,000mph together on a giant living spherical being, and our “weather” is the interface between it and the inconceivable expanse we call the Universe.

SUMMARY
–We’ve already had a max wind gust to 62mph on Mt. Tom in Easthampton, and 48mph in Westfield at Barnes Air Force Base
–The rest of us have been seeing gusts between 25-45mph
–This will continue this evening as snow showers with some embedded snow squalls are set to move east-southeast into the WMass and northwest CT region this evening
–There is a Snow Squall Warning posted for the western Catskills and that squall may hold a good amount of its strength and impact central and southern Litchfield County between 7:30-8pm or so
–Coatings up to maybe 1″ of snow are possible in any heavier snow showers/squalls, along with gusty winds, and low visibility which could impact travel, so if you get caught in one of these, you might consider pulling over and letting it pass
–The bigger pulse of wind will come with the Arctic frontal passage, and this moves into and through the region between 10pm-midnight tonight from west to east

–You will know when this is transpiring, as winds should pick up even faster than this evening’s speeds, with sustained winds of 20-30mph (not gusts!)
–Gusts should reach 35-55mph, and we can’t rule out some 60-65mph gusts in a few high terrain spots
–Current outages are low, with Hampshire County reporting 165 out, with not even an additional 100 outages through the rest of WMass
–Columbia County NY (just west of southern Berkshire County and northern Litchfield County CT) has over 1000 outages, so they had a good burst of wind there earlier
–Temps now in the 20s and 30s will continue to drop overnight and land in the mid to upper single digits by dawn tomorrow morning
–Wind chills after midnight will crash into the negative 5º to negative 20º range just before and after dawn with continued strong gusty winds
–Tuesday is going to be sunny, blustery, and cold, and the wind will persist through the day
–The morning should see gusts 30-50mph out of the northwest, and then sit down “a little” during the afternoon to 25-40mph.
–Regardless, with highs only in the low to mid 20s (and only in the teens to low 20s in southern VT and Monadnock Region!), wind chills will be in the single digits, and it will just a very cold, blustery day
–Wind finally slackens a bit at night, but still should be breezy with gusts 20-30mph and lows in the teens
–Wednesday the Arctic air mass quickly lifts northeast and out of here, leaving us with highs in the low to mid 40s with sunshine and high pressure
–Thursday through Sunday features fair weather, colder, highs in the 30s (highs in the 20s in SVT) and plenty of sunshine

It looks milder next week, so Spring lovers take heart – the next 36 hours will come and go like every other rite of passage or season of life we pass through. We can complain, lament, resist, but it matters not. It will arrive, and it will go, not unlike our inner emotional states.

As George Harrison so beautifully sang, All Things Must Pass, and this snappy bite of Space lurking just several dozen miles above our heads will bare its teeth and then keep on truckin’ out of our lives.

Good morning everybody, rain and shine! I mean, rise and cloud!

Well, you get what I mean. Happy 1st Day of Meteorological Spring!

We had some rain batches over night ahead of the first cold front that will push through the region this morning. Rain showers will continue off/on during this morning, with sunshine developing by early afternoon.

Temps are mainly above freezing, and some patchy fog is around. A few folks in the western hilltowns, and up into the spine of the southern Greens are between 30-32 degrees, so there may be pockets of icing as mentioned yesterday.

Our cold front is located over central NY and will be pushing through the region by late morning, with a wind shift around to the northwest.

Sunshine should break out by noon or early afternoon after the showers quit, and temps will come up into the low to mid 40s before cold advection begins.

West and northwest winds will pick up as temps plummet through the afternoon, gusting 25-40mph at times by evening.

After sunset is when the wintry mayhem commences (appropriate for the first day of meteorological Spring).

The second Arctic cold front will be approaching the region and pass through tonight. Along and ahead of this front, scattered snow squalls will develop, and one or two could produce drastically lowered visibility, a quick coating to inch of snow, and strong gusty winds, as the squalls pull faster wind aloft down to the ground.

Squalls should move through between 8pm-11pm, roughly, and will be tracking east-southeastward through the region.

Northwest winds will pick up tonight and into the pre-dawn hours, gusting 35-55mph at times, with some outages possible.

Temps will continue to plummet down into the upper single digits to MAYBE low teens, and these very cold temps along with strong gusty winds will combine to produce wind chill readings (a/k/a “apparent temperatures”) down into the 5-20º below zero range by dawn!

BUNDLE UP if you are heading out very late tonight or tomorrow, as full-on Winter arrives for a day and a night.

Tuesday will be sunny, blustery, and cold with highs in the low to mid 20s with west winds gusting up to 40mph, especially during the first half of the day, with slackening wind expected as the day winds down.

Lows tomorrow night will be in the teens, with lighter wind.

We’re mild for a day on Wednesday with highs in the low to mid 40s under sunny skies as high pressure builds in, and lows in the 20s, with a cold front passing through providing a modified but reinforcing shot of colder air to kick off early March.

Highs will be in the 30s and lows in the teens through the weekend with fair weather expected, along with northwesterly breezes.

Once this trough lifts out by next week, we could see a stronger Spring surge.

If you want snow, pray for a strong coastal storm to be drawn northwest somehow over the weekend, as we’d have the temps to produce a snowstorm, but the flow feels forward-leaning, meaning it will likely pass out to sea… sure will look pretty on the satellite shots, though!

Have a great day, and I will update later as the Arctic parks itself over us tonight and tomorrow… if you find my reporting helpful or valuable, I need your support during my 2021 Annual Membership/Support Drive.
