Western Mass Weather for June 3, 2021 (updated 6:40pm)

SHOWERS, DOWNPOURS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP INTO THE REGION AROUND OR AFTER SUNSET THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT… WE GET A LULL TOMORROW MORNING, THEN BY EITHER LATE MORNING OR EARLY AFTERNOON SHOWERS AND STORMS REDEVELOP ACROSS THE REGION, AND A STRONG STORM CAN’T BE RULED OUT… SOME HEAVY RAINERS ARE POSSIBLE OVERNIGHT AND TOMORROW AFTERNOON… ACTIVITY SHOULD END BY DINNER TIME TOMORROW… 6:40pm Thurs…

Good afternoon folks, just a quick update to say that we are seeing showers and thunderstorms develop over northeast and eastern PA as well as south-central and southeast NY, tracking northeast toward southern New England.

The heaviest activity at the moment should pass into the northeast half of CT, along and east of I-91, as well as eastern Hampden County and CMass.

However, other showers and downpours and a possible storm will also pass into the W-CMass/SVT/SWNH/NCT region as a whole tonight and into the pre-dawn hours.

Some downpours are possible, and some folks will get very little rain with others seeing up to an inch or so if you get under a couple of rainers.

Dewpoint temps have risen into the low to mid 60s as a warm front pushes in, and so it will be muggy overnight with lows also in the low to mid 60s so some patchy fog is possible later as temps cool and dewpoints come up.

For tomorrow, we should have a lull in the morning with maybe a few isolated lighter showers until noon or so.

Then another wave pushes into the region, and more showers, downpours, and thunderstorms will develop during the early to mid afternoon, and some storms may be strong with torrential rain and isolated damaging wind gusts, though any damage would be sporadic, meaning compared to the whole region, few should experience such an event, if at all.

Highs tomorrow will reach the 75-80º range, and any showers or storms should quit sometime between 5-7pm with drying as the night wears on with lows 55-60º.

Then?

The Hottening.

80s on Saturday, 80s to 90s Sunday, 90s on Monday, 80s and 90s Tuesday, and 80s to near 90 on Wednesday.

Could someone in our region see a 5-day heat wave? It’s unlikely but it’s possible, especially south of the Pike in the Pioneer Valley floor.

Lots of sunshine during that period, as a giant anomalous ridge parks itself over the eastern seaboard.

Full-on Summer on the way, folks.

UNSETTLED TODAY AND TOMORROW WITH HEAT WAVE COMMENCING ON SUNDAY AND LASTING THROUGH AT LEAST TUESDAY, AND POSSIBLY WEDNESDAY… HEAT INDICES LIKELY TO GO OVER 100º BY EARLY NEXT WEEK SO FOLKS WHO DON’T DO WELL IN THE HEAT SHOULD MAKE PLANS TO BE IN AIR CONDITIONED SPACES MONDAY AND TUESDAY WHEN PEAK OF HEAT MOVES THROUGH… SCATTERED SHOWERS MIXED WITH DRY PERIODS UNDER CLOUDY SKIES TODAY AND THIS AFTERNOON, SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS AFTER 7-8PM TONIGHT BECOME MORE NUMEROUS… MORE SHOWERS/STORMS FRIDAY LATE MORNING INTO THE AFTERNOON… 7am Thurs…

Good morning folks, I want to start off by saying it was GREAT to meet some of you over the past two days as I drove the 18-year old golden chariot/jalopy all over Hampshire County delivering 2021 Membership Packages to those who became Support Network Members earlier this year during my member drive.

I appreciate your support so very much, and it’s always good to put faces to the screen names, when possible.

As for our weather, we have some morning fog in the Berkshires that will burn off with time. We also have high pressure building off of the eastern seaboard along with an upper level trough to our west-northwest, and with resultant flows between each, we have moisture-laden air being funneled right up and into New England over the next couple of days before a warm frontal boundary sweeps it east and out of here, leading to a big heat and humidity surge for Saturday through at least Wednesday.

That is to say, heat lovers can now allow their giddyness to build while heat haters can now begin installing air conditions, setting up fans, and making ice cubes, because as Horatio Sanz said on Saturday Night Live, the heat will be hot.

For today, we’re cloudy and we’ll see one shortwave move south of us and mainly affect eastern CT, RI and southeast MA with copious rainfall and some t-storms, though we can expect occasional showers here and there across the region later this morning, afternoon, and into early evening.

A second wave moves into the WMass region tonight, and so any time after about 7pm or 8pm into the overnight hours we should see more numerous showers and thunderstorms, and a storm or two may become strong with some gusty winds over 40mph with heavy rain (attached chart shows potential radar depiction at 10pm). Any hail or brief tornado threat should remain southwest of us, but I will monitor it tonight and update accordingly.

Highs today reach the upper 60s to mid 70s. Say goodbye to such low temperatures until at least a week from now, probably longer.

Lows tonight will be quite mild, and should hover around the 60º mark.

For Friday, again a few scattered morning showers are possible, but by late morning to mid afternoon we should see more showers and thunderstorms building ahead of a frontal boundary that passes through Friday night.

Highs will reach the mid to upper 70s with lows again near 60º with patchy fog possible.

Saturday will feature mostly sunny skies, as the upper level ridge finally begins to center over the east coast, and with a surface high pressure cell east of the Virginia coastline, the heat pump will commence, and The Hottening will be underway.

Expect highs well into the 80s on Saturday, and humidity will be increasing as well. A spot shower or storm is possible in the afternoon. Lows will be in the mid 60s, which is some 20 degrees warmer than the highs we had over Memorial Day Weekend!

Sunday through Tuesday is soup time, with humid conditions and highs in the upper 80s to mid 90s through the period, although Monday may surge into the UPPER 90s. With dewpoint temps into the mid to upper 60s, and possibly low 70s briefly, we are talking about a Heat Index surging past 100º, and maybe past 105º, so I would not be surprised to see Excessive Heat Watches and Heat Advisories to be hoisted by the NWS as we get closer, if this trend continues.

Lows on these nights will be in the 65-70º range, so sleep will un-fostered, shall we say.

Wednesday looks hot as well with 80s and 90s, but we will be seeing a frontal boundary approach by Thursday with a chance for strong thunderstorms, possibly severe, depending on the exact setup, so that’s something I will be monitoring as well.

Have a great day, and I’ll update this evening regarding tonight’s expected wet weather.
