Western Mass Weather for June 26, 2019

STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PUSHING EAST INTO EASTERN NY… HAIL, FREQUENT LIGHTNING, GUSTY WINDS ALL POSSIBLE… (5:30pm Wed)
Good afternoon everybody, quick post to update you, but we have a broken line of showers and thunderstorms tracking east into the Hudson Valley Region of eastern NY as you can see on radar. A lightning strike map is also included. Hail, frequent lightning and torrential rain has been reported with these, especially the southern cell.

You can see the strongest storms fall into two clusters, one that is set to move into SVT, and the other that is set to track east into the central/southern Taconics, Litchfield County of NW CT and the southern Berkshires, generally tracking along and south of the Rt. 9 corridor as it goes east.

Low level lapse rates are steep, so these may hold strength into the valley, but they should at least hold strength into the western hilltowns of Hampshire and Hampden Counties.

I will update as necessary, but keep an eye to the west and get inside when these arrive, especially if you live west of the I-91 corridor.

ASIDE FROM AN EXPECTED LINE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TONIGHT BETWEEN 6-9PM, WE’V E GOT THREE SURPRISE SUMMERY MOSTLY SUNNY AND MUGGY DAYS TO CLOSE THE WEEK… UNSETTLED WEEKEND LEADS MORE FAIR WEATHER EARLY NEXT WEEK… (6:35am Wed)

Good morning everybody, after a soggy Tuesday for many of us, we’ve got a summery stretch coming up to end the week, but it won’t be super hot or oppressively humid or severely thundery.

Unfortunately, everybody’s favorite end-of-week day pair (a/k/a Saturday and Sunday) will feature periods of showers and thunderstorms with a pre-frontal area of showers/storms Friday night, a cold frontal passage Saturday evening with more showers/storms, and the upper low cold pool swinging through Sunday, which will create instability and more showers/storms.

We will be in and out of the rain Friday through Sunday I’m afraid, but early next week looks nice!

DAILIES
Wed: Mostly sunny, humid, highs in the low to mid 80s, light westerly wind on average, showers and thunderstorms late, roughly 6-9pm (will update by earl/mid afternoon). Lows tonight near 60

Thurs: Mostly sunny, continued humid, highs low to mid 80s, dew points in the 60s, lows in the low 60s under mostly clear skies, clouds possible late in the day and evening

Fri: Hottest day of the year so far, a little less humid with highs low 80s high terrain, upper 80s to near 90 degrees in the valley and down in CT and east into CMass, mostly sunny, clouds increase late.

Fri night: Upper level low pressure dives south out of eastern Canada, and swings an unstable air mass into the region Friday night, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected, lows hang in the low 60s

Sat: Cold front approaches from the west, highs mid 70s to mid 80s, humid, showers and thunderstorms arrive in the afternoon thanks to lift provided by the cold front, and upper jet lift. Lows hang in the low 60s with more showers/storms possible.

Sun: The front clears to the east, but the upper level low swings through and floats a cold pool of air overhead. This destabilizes the atmosphere with surface highs in the 70s and highs a mile up near 50 degrees, lapse rates will be strong enough to produce more scattered showers and thunderstorms. Lows will sit down into the mid 50s as we dry out

Mon and Tues: Looks fair at the moment with high pressure pushing the whole upper low mess out to sea, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s with less humidity.

Have a great day!
