Western Mass Weather for June 18, 2020

[INCREASINGLY MUGGY AND WARMER AIR DEVELOPS ACROSS THE WMASS REGION STARTING TODAY AND LASTING WELL INTO NEXT WEEK… ISOLATED SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM CHANCES INCREASE SATURDAY AND LAST WELL INTO NEXT WEEK, WHICH LOOKS MUGGY AS WELL… NO SEVERE WEATHER IN SIGHT… NO RECORD-BREAKING HEAT IN SIGHT… 6:50AM THURS]

Good morning everybody, after some early morning patchy fog burns off, we’ll be handed a mostly sunny day with increasing humidity and highs in the mid 80s to low 90s as a light southwest wind finally gets into gear thanks in part to our Rex Block pattern breaking down (strong high to the north, strong low to the south, that reinforces each other).

The breakdown in blocking is helping the high to finally track southeast of our region, and with clockwise flow, will start kicking southwesterly flow into our region.

Dewpoints rise into the low 60s, so it won’t be crazy muggy, but you’ll feel it. Lows will drop into the low 60s with patchy fog possible late.

By Friday, similar temps but a bit more humidity when compared to Thursday can be expected (85-90 highs, low to mid 60s dew points). We can’t rule out an isolated shower or thunderstorm and lows will drop into the low 60s.

For Saturday, skies will be more mixed blend of sun and clouds as remnants from our Carolinas soaker drift north a bit. Highs will again be in the mid 80s to low 90s with humid conditions, and scattered showers are expected in the afternoon and evening. Lows will be in the low to mid 60s.

For Sunday, we cool down a touch, with highs in the low to upper 80s, humid conditions, and scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm possible. Lows will be in the low to mid 60s.

Much of next week looks muggy, very warm with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s, and partly sunny on average with chances for afternoon/evening scattered showers or thunderstorms each day thanks to surface-heated instability that waxes and maxes during the afternoon/evening, and wanes at night.

As you can see on the attached surface soil moisture drought indicator graphic, we are dry in southern New England and need the rain.

Hopefully next week puts even a slight dent in the rainfall deficit we’re under currently.

Have a great day!
