Western Mass Weather for January 7, 2020

[WIND ADVISORIES HAVE BEEN HOISTED] FOR WMASS AND CMASS EAST OF THE BERKSHIRES, AS WELL AS NORTH-CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST CT FOR WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON/EVE… ASIDE FROM A FEW COATINGS IN NORTHEAST CT AND SOUTHERN WORCESTER COUNTY BY DAWN TOMORROW, ONLY SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED IN THE WMASS REGION OVERNIGHT, WITH SOME FOLKS SEEING NOTHING… SNOW SHOWERS AND SQUALLS WILL PRECEDE STRONG NORTHWESTERLY WINDS TOMORROW AFTERNOON… WINDS WILL GUST TO 40MPH AT TIMES TOMORROW AFTERNOON, EVENING AND NIGHT… BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS FOR SOME BY EARLY THURSDAY MORNING… (8:20pm Tuesday)

Good evening everybody, it’s chilly out there, and dry in many places. However, it’s snowing a mile or so aloft, so what gives?

It’s too dry at the surface.

Dewpoint depressions (the difference between the air temperature and the dew point temperatures) are 10+ degrees in many spots, and when they are about 8 degrees or larger, precipitation tends to evaporate before it reaches the surface of the Earth, which is what is happening currently.

Some folks south of the Pike and east of I-91 should see some snow showers, and some coatings are possible in those areas overnight, but largely this shouldn’t amount to too much.

Lows will drop into the mid to upper 20s tonight.

For tomorrow, early morning clouds and flurries should give way to partly sunny skies, and highs should climb to the low to mid 30s.

A cold front will be approaching from the west along with an upper level system that will steepen lapse rates overhead (making it very cold aloft), allowing for rising air and some scattered heavier snow showers or squalls to form in the afternoon and evening.

Around the same time, northwesterly wind gusts will pick up, and could blow 30-40mph at times, maybe even a little higher in a few spots.

While any snow showers or squalls will be short-lived and scattered, don’t be surprised if they coat the ground in spots, and make for slick driving for a short period of time.

Northwest winds will continue to gust 30-40mph Wednesday night, while lows plummet into the single digits to low teens.

Between midnight and dawn Thursday morning, we could see wind chills in the single digits above to the single digits below zero, so bundle up!

Thursday is cold, mostly sunny and fair with lighter winds and highs in the mid to upper 20s, and lows in the teens to near 20 degrees as clouds build.

Friday through Sunday are looking showery and milder, and I will update you in the morning with more granular detail.

Have a great night!

[SNOW SHOWERS TOMORROW W/ COATINGS POSSIBLE EAST OF I-91 AND SOUTH OF ROUTE 2] A LIGHT SNOWFALL FROM SOUTHEAST MA ARRIVES TONIGHT AND DEPARTS TOMORROW MORNING… BERKSHIRE SNOW SHOWERS WEDNESDAY EVENING WITH COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE BRINGS A NIGHT AND A DAY OF WINTRY COLD AND WIND… THEN THE FLOW TURNS SOUTHWEST WITH SNOW TO RAIN FRIDAY, AND A SHOWERY SATURDAY WITH RECORD HIGHS POSSIBLE… COOLER BUT STILL ABOVE AVERAGE SUNDAY WITH SHOWERS POSSIBLE… WATCH FOR BLACK ICE THIS AM… (7:05am Tuesday 1/7/2020)

Good morning everybody, it’s cold enough out there with temps in the mid 20s to low 30s and generally light winds.

For today, partly sunny skies on average in the morning give way to clouds increasing by afternoon as high pressure over the DelMarVa Peninsula of the Mid-Atlantic Region presses east, and makes way for developing low pressure now over the southern Ohio Valley to track northeast and pass about 75 miles south of Nantucket Island overnight.

Highs today will reach the mid to upper 30s. Again, clouds increase in the afternoon, and snow showers could arrive as early as 9pm-midnight.

While anywhere in the region could receive a coating from this system due to its NW track trend, the best chance is both south of the Route 2 corridor and east of I-91, which represents the more southeasterly portion of my coverage area. Could some places in southern Worcester County and northeast CT or even eastern Hampden County see an inch? Yes, it’s possible, but this i mainly a southeast MA, very light system.

Lows tonight dip into the low to mid 20s, and snow departs by sunrise tomorrow.

Wednesday will see highs in the low to mid 30s, and a cold front will be approaching later in the day, along with an upper level trough. This will bring the chance for a few snow showers or even a squall to the Taconics, Litchfields, southern Greens, Berkshires and western hilltowns in the afternoon and evening.

Northwest winds will also pick up, resulting from the pressure gradient from high pressure to our NW and low pressure to our ENE.

Winds will gust 25-35mph Wednesday afternoon into the evening, and lows will plummet into the high single digits to low teens! This will produce very cold wind chills so bundle up if you are out late Wednesday night or up early Thursday morning!

We get a full winter day on Thursday with highs in the mid 20s under mostly sunny skies.

Thursday night will cloud up once again, but not before temps dip into the upper teens to low 20s.

Snow on Friday morning may accumulate a bit before changing to rain, with temps rising into the low to mid 40s with more rain at night and lows in the upper 30s.

Saturday will be the mildest day we’ve had in a while! Highs will reach the low to mid 50s with strong southwesterly flow, and more showers are expected.

Sunday looks cooler, but highs will still be in the 40s with more unsettled weather, so this weekend is not looking too hot, though the mild temps will feel good, especially after a brutally cold Thursday morning.

Have a great day, peeps!
