Western Mass Weather for January 19, 2021

[PERIODS OF SNOW SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON, TOMORROW MORNING, AND THURSDAY WILL PRODUCE MOOD SNOW FOR SOME, AND LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS FOR OTHERS, MAINLY IN THE HIGH TERRAIN EITHER SIDE OF THE CT RIVER… A COLD, BREEZY WEEKEND ARRIVES, WITH TEMPS REMAINING COLD NEXT WEEK… NEXT CHANCE FOR A MORE SUBSTANTIAL SNOWSTORM IS ON TUESDAY… 8:05AM TUES]

Good morning everybody, we start off cold this morning in the 20s and will only rebound into the low to mid 30s for highs today under mostly cloudy skies (though we should see some sunny periods at times).

A warm front is pushing into the region, and a weak disturbance will work through New England this afternoon with a cold frontal passage by tonight.

This will produce scattered snow showers this afternoon and evening, and any of us in the WMass region could see a snow shower.

By tonight, a west-northwest flow is reset, which will produce lake effect snow showers and upslope snow showers in southern VT, the Taconics, and the Berkshires, where a coating to an inch is possible. Lows low to mid 20s.

High terrain snow showers will be present for some tomorrow morning, and then dissipate by early afternoon. Northwest winds will gust up to 30mph at times, and highs will be colder than today/Tuesday, only reaching the upper 20s to low 30s, so bundle up! Lows will dip into the low to mid teens by tomorrow night under partly cloudy skies.

For Thursday, we have one more weak wintry wave to experience, and this Clipper system could actually produce a period of light snow in the region, especially north of the MA/CT state line in WMass, CMass, SVT and SWNH.

Some widespread coatings or light accumulations are possible, but I will revisit that as we get closer.

Highs again will be in the upper 20s to low 30s with lows in the mid 20s.

Because that storm passes to our north, it floats a warm front through the region by Thursday night, and our highs on Friday should therefore get up into the low to mid 30s in the high terrain, and mid to upper 30s in the Pioneer Valley of WMass and N.CT under partly to mostly sunny skies. Lows will be in the upper teens.

A cold front passes through the region, and turns our weekend COLD. Highs will only be in the 20s both days with lows in the low teens, but at least fair weather is expected with plenty of sunshine! It will also be breezy, with wind gusts to 20mph both days.

By early next week, we will be tracking a possible winter storm. This low looks like a “flat tracker”, which means tracking more or less west to east, but as of now it would be tracking to our south, and if it comes together, could produce a moderate-type snowfall, so stay tuned!

Have a great day!
