Western Mass Weather for January 17, 2021

[A SERIES OF 3 LIGHT SNOW-SHOWERY NORTHERN WAVES WILL TRACK ACROSS THE WMASS REGION THROUGH THE UPCOMING WEEK… TYPICAL HIGH TERRAIN AREAS WEST OF THE I-91 CORRIDOR IN S.VT, W.MASS, NW.CT AND E.NY WILL SEE ADDITIONAL LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS IN SPOTS THROUGH THE WEEK, WHICH WILL BE COLD… NO BIG STORMS IN SIGHT AT THE MOMENT… 8:15AM SUN]

Good morning everybody, we’re starting off in the low to mid 30s, with some upper 20s in the higher terrain.

We also have intermittent snow showers occurring in the northern Berkshires/Taconics, southern VT, and some of these may drift into the hilltowns of western Franklin and western Hampshire Counties this morning.

Some additional very light accumulations are possible, and then this activity should see a break later today before the next wave arrives.

West winds will continue to gust 25-35mph at times, perhaps less in the valleys, and highs will reach the 35-40º range. Skies will feature more clouds than sun, with some sunny breaks.

For folks interested in some of the high terrain snow totals from yesterday’s storm, I have included a link below.

I had mentioned that the northeast Berkshires and western Franklin County might see amounts into that 6-12″ range (even though I called for 2-6″), and that certainly happened in some cases.

It even transpired over western Hampshire County as well in towns like Cummington.

For tonight, the first of three northern wave upper level systems whips through our region, bringing a resumption of snow shower activity, mostly in the high terrain west of I-91.

Wind should slacken in the valley but may still gust over 25mph at times in the Berkshires. Lows should dip into the upper 20s, and a few more coatings to an inch are possible overnight, maybe up to 2″ in SVT.

For Monday, hilltown and mountain snow showers continue in the morning, then should dissipate. Highs again will reach the 35-40º range, and we’ll see more clouds in the hills with partly sunny skies in the valley. Lows will drop into the upper teens to low 20s under partly cloudy skies.

Tuesday should start off lovely with partly to mostly sunny skies as a brief ridge of high pressure sweeps through. Highs will be in the low to mid 30s with clouds increasing in the afternoon.

Tuesday night into Wednesday is our second northern stream wave. All of these are Clipper-y type systems, moisture-starved, emanating from southern Canada, and bringing periods of snow showers or light snow, capable of producing a coating to an inch or two of snow. Lows will be in the low 20s.

After any morning snow shower, highs on Wednesday will only reach the 25-30º range as colder air seeps into the region as the week wears on. Partly to mostly sunny skies will develop, leading to a VERY cold Wednesday night with lows in the upper singles to low teens!

For Thursday afternoon and night, our third wave moves through, with a storm developing southeast of us, but too far away to make any big impacts. Still, snow showers are expected. Highs will again be in the 25-30º range and lows in the low 20s.

Friday will be fair, and temps will rise into the 30s. A cold front sweeps the region at night and highs on Saturday will likely only be in the 20s as deeper Winter sets into the region more.

Next chance for a substantial storm would be early next week, and I will keep an eye on it.

May The Force be with You.
